Compass College of Film and Media invites applications for a Dean of Film and Media for their Associates and Bachelor of Fine Arts Programs. Ideal candidates must possess a master’s degree in a film related field, arts, or education and a minimum of five years’ leadership or management and teaching experience in higher education.
Position Summary
The Dean of Film and Media will lead curriculum and faculty development for Compass College of Film and Media as it strives to provide excellence in the vocational and spiritual training of its students, leading to careers in entertainment and media arts. The Dean of Film and Media will have the opportunity to build the general education department and its coursework and assist in developing and maintaining the educational standards and benchmarks of the technical academic coursework. The quick-paced environment requires the confidence to handle a variety of projects and tasks. Success in this position is dependent on building rapport and relationships with individuals and requires an ongoing, poised, and persuasive communication style. The Dean of Education will be learning-centered and work toward enhancing all students' experiences and outcomes at Compass. The Dean of Film and Media requires classroom teaching as well as administrative duties

Duties & Responsibilities
- Manages and directs the education operations by focusing on developing talent and meeting academic excellence.
- Develops an annual academic strategic plan in alignment with the goals and objectives of the institutional plan, participates in the on-going development of the IAIP and its required follow-up, and conducts and implements the academic strategic plan.
- Keeps abreast of state and federal educational directives, mandates, and programmatic accrediting guidelines to effectively manage change and compliance.
- Remains current, in conjunction and collaboration with leadership and faculty, with knowledge pertaining to entertainment industry innovation and entrepreneurial/business trends to keep the college cutting-edge in its training.
- Collaborates with leadership and faculty in development of academic coursework, curriculum components, and course maps.
- Coordinates all class schedules with leadership and faculty.
- Fosters a learning-conducive, teaching environment, and provides the oversight instrumental to faculty and staff having the tools and resources to be successful.
- Develops and maintains operational consistency in program, course, and faculty assessments; and ensures program compliance through cyclical assessments and improvement plans.
- Coaches faculty and adjunct faculty in teaching methods and instruction techniques and in developing appropriate syllabi, lesson plans and use of grading rubrics for all assignments.
- Provides and/or facilitates in-service training to teaching staff to maintain teaching excellence in the appropriate use of new trends and innovative practices in academic initiatives.
- Helps new and long-term faculty understand standard educational concepts, how they affect student learning and how to successfully incorporate the concepts into their respective courses.
- Conducts faculty evaluations per term, which includes syllabus and grading rubric reviews, use of lesson goals with appropriate measurement procedures to assess student learning, appropriate tracking procedures to monitor student performance, and reports student performance with relevant feedback in a timely manner.
- Assists faculty in identifying professional development needs and in creating long-range, professional development plans.
- Assesses appropriateness of curriculum delivery and application, while creating and maintaining a safe learning environment.
- Oversees the General Education and Applied General Education courses, and follows the prescribed guidelines set by the accrediting and regulatory bodies that govern the college.
- Provides students with a positive experience in education by ensuring the courses are operating effectively and efficiently.
- Works with the Director of Student Affairs, instructors, and administration to provide a timely and relevant perspective into solutions regarding student retention
- Work with students to review present schedules and their progress toward graduation and to revise student schedules as necessary to ensure appropriate classes are scheduled to meet graduation requirements.
- Collaborates with college departments to optimize the student intra- and inter- learning-to-career cycles (community, exploration, collaboration, experiment and application, engagement, retention, graduation, and employment).
- Works with staff and faculty in planning and facilitating events targeted toward students and parents, i.e., orientation and commencement.
- Carries out teaching duties, including curriculum development and teaching coursework, of one course per term as needed.
- Develops job descriptions for faculty and recruits full-time and adjunct faculty for teaching positions in both technical and general education.
- Extends offers of employment or initiates a dismissal within the college in consultation with the President, Vice President of Operations, and legal counsel.
- Conducts new faculty orientation to ensure each faculty member embraces the Compass College culture; ensures new faculty understand the pedagogy and teaching philosophy of Compass College.
- Other duties as assigned.
Schedule and Benefits
- Compass College’s standard office hours are 8AM to 5PM, Monday to Friday. The management hours very based on projects, events, and due dates.
- Compass is located in downtown Grand Rapids and provides paid parking to its employees.

- A Master’s Degree with preference in film, education, or arts.
- Minimum of five years’ leadership or management and teaching experience in higher education.

- Some travel may be required as needed for events and activities. While performing duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or listen. The employee must lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move 25 pounds.
