DEPARTMENT OVERVIEWThe Office of Orientation is responsible for implementing campus-wide orientation programs to all new freshman and transfer students, and their families. The office works closely and consistently with all campus offices/units to ensure a smooth student transitional experience. The office is part of Enrollment Management, which includes Financial Aid and Scholarships, Orientation and Undergraduate Admissions. Enrollment Management is part of the multi-faceted academic Division of Undergraduate Education.

https://orientation.ucsc.edu/ JOB SUMMARYApplies professional knowledge of concepts, policies, and procedures related to student services in support of the Orientation Office and Student Services. The Orientation Coordinator provides a full range of student services within the Orientation Office and works independently, and in consultation with the director, to resolve student services-related issues. Recommends and provides support with policies, practices, and procedures. Receives guidance on most group work assignments, including issues requiring in-depth knowledge of specialized programs, and regularly consults with Student Services specialists in the course of completing increasingly complex assignments. Follows standard practices and procedures in analyzing Student Services situations or data from which answers can be readily obtained. Exercises some judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action

JOB DUTIES - 20% - Utilizes in-depth knowledge of the organization's academic and social resources. Prepares, updates, and evaluates program and project documents as needed. Reviews and updates program processes and procedures yearly to accommodate organizational changes and university targets.
- 20% - Plans and implements highly visible and complex orientation programs for new students and families both virtually and in-person. Oversees and conducts the administration of on-campus and virtual orientation programs and sessions.
- 20% - Supervises and provides direction to orientation student staff. Including monitoring email and phone communication. Plans and designs workshops for student employees as needed.
- 15% - Applies professional student services concepts, providing the full range of student services to student populations served by the organization.
- 10% - Applies general knowledge of admissions, financial aid, and advising concepts to train student staff and to help guide new students and families.
- 10% - Assists in preparing student staff recruitment materials, participates in student interviews, and in coordination with other orientation staff prepares and implements quarterly and yearly Orientation Leader trainings.
- 5% - Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS - Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Strong ability to assess processes and implement improvements.

- Strong verbal communication skills. Thorough interpersonal skills. Active listening skills. Possesses strong customer service skills.
- Organizational skills and ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.
- Strong proficiency with standard office software as well as internet and email applications.

- Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
- Prior event planning experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS - Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
- Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
- Knowledge of admissions requirements and financial aid concepts.
- Ability in problem identification and reasoning.
- Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
- Interpersonal skills.
- Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
- Knowledge of university policies, processes, and procedures.
- Ability to interpret policies and develop procedures to ensure compliance.
- Knowledge of languages other than English, both written and oral.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT - Selected candidates will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
- Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends. Ability to work increased hours, nights and weekends during the summer months of May, June, July, August and September (peak orientation season).
