Job Summary: | This is a direct patient care position caring for UW-Madison students by providing screening, assessment, and nutritional counseling or appropriate referral regarding health/nutritional needs. The job will require gaining 1) expertise in providing nutrition counseling to adolescent and young adults, including care of patients with eating disorders, 2) familiarity with unique environment on a university campus, and 3) sensitivity to the diversity of the student community. The position supports healthy lifestyle choices and health maintenance throughout the campus community through participation in and contributions to appropriate campus initiatives and serve as a resource to UHS medical, mental health, and prevention staff members on nutrition related topics.
Additional duties may include teaching/precepting health sciences student learners/trainees, development and facilitation of group classes, development of educational materials, guest lecturing for nutrition classes or informal groups, being available to students for interviews (class projects or student media), and other out-reach activities. Duties are performed under the general supervision of the Director of Medical Services.
80% Direct Clinical Care -Conduct comprehensive nutrition assessments, interpret biochemical and clinical data, and monitor those at nutritional risk, with a special emphasis on the disordered eating population. -Develop treatment plan based on nutrition assessment; student concerns may include: eating disorders and disordered eating, diabetes, GI concerns, hypertension, abnormal blood lipids, weight concerns using an anti-diet approach, sports nutrition, vegetarian diets and food intolerances. -Collaborate and communicate with community MDs, therapists, or area hospitals when indicated on nutritional/behavioral plans for students receiving treatment outside of UHS. Evaluate effectiveness of nutritional recommendations and revise as needed upon follow-up. -Make appropriate notations and recommendations in the student's electronic medical record. 15% Outreach -Support student organizations and assist them in implementing nutrition related campus initiatives and outreach programming. -Participate in university-organized health events and collaborate with clinical staff on preventative healthcare topics for the campus community and topics relevant to University Health Service.
5% Other duties: Evaluate and modify policies and procedures as needed, according to current standards. Implement current or new policies regarding staff activities and monitor for adherence, usefulness and effectiveness. -Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement activities at UHS -Participate in UHS committees and workgroups as requested. -Represent UHS within the UW-Madison campus, Madison community, and local, regional, and national professional organizations |
Responsibilities: | Provides nutrition education and counseling including assessment and treatment plan design in a clinical, research, or public health and safety setting to improve health and wellness. - 40% Evaluates nutritional needs and treatment readiness and develops, coordinates, and disseminates treatment plans for patients and their families in collaboration with medical professionals and other partners
- 10% Completes reports related to nutritional treatment, patient planning, and/or medical care according to established policies and procedures
- 40% Teaches patients and support systems about proper nutrition and helps develop strategies to cope with nutritional needs and problems
- 5% Recommends referrals, schedules logistics, and secures resources for patients to receive medical care or various program assistance
- 5% Develops and schedules operational work plans and may provide expertise and training and guidance to staff, the community, peers, and/or students

Education: | Required Bachelor of Science Degree

Qualifications: | Required: 5 years clinical experience. 2 years or more of clinically supervised experience working with patients with a variety of eating disorders including, but not limited to, restrictive eating, bulimia, binge eating disorder. Ability to work effectively as a team member while also being able to work independently. Strong listening and communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to be flexible. Motivational interviewing skills Ability to meet deadlines and good organizational skills. Ability to apply current evidenced-based nutrition recommendations.
Preferred: 2 years or more experience working with a young adult/college population. Strong assessment and planning skills, group facilitation, and writing skills. Ability to motivate and enthuse others in initiating behavior change Interest and ability to create new patient education materials as well as revising existing materials. Experience with public speaking |
License/Certification: | Required RD - Registered Dietitian Registered Dietitian (as delineated by the Commission on Dietetic Registration) Certified Dietitian in the State of Wisconsin. Maintenance of continuing education is required.
