THE DEPARTMENT:
Student Health & Wellness Services is one component of the Campus Health and Wellbeing Cluster within the Division of Student Affairs. This new cluster stresses the University's commitment to preventative and holistic approaches to wellbeing in support of students and the institution's mission and strategic plan. In addition to Student Health & Wellness Services, this cluster includes Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), the Integrated Care Network and the Disability Resource Center. The mission of Student Health and Wellness Services is to promote students' healthy lifestyles and academic success by providing quality medical, psychological, and wellness services. The department provides ambulatory health care, health education programs, prevention and healing services to students of Cal Poly Pomona.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The
Health Educator will be responsible for the following:
- Design, conduct and evaluate community health promotion/disease prevention education programs to improve health knowledge, attitudes and behaviors of students using health promotion theories, evidence based best practices, outcome evaluation, statistical analysis, and health behavior research methodologies.
- Design, operate, and maintain health education services in support of the mission of SHWS including nutrition education, stress management, time management, alcohol and other drugs, exercise education and sexual health education to the campus community.
- Provide individual one-on-one patient education recorded in the Electronic Medical Record on a variety of health issues including nutrition education, stress management, time management, alcohol and other drugs, exercise education and sexual health. Assist supervision of peer health educators as they provide health education.
- Conduct, analyze, and disseminate research data on the health of college students and prevention initiatives using existing data collection instruments such as the National College Health Assessment (NCHA).
- Assist in marketing and campus outreach efforts to increase student awareness of Student Health & Wellness services. Coordinate and conduct outreach activities to interconnect SHWS to the campus community, such as UHS, OSLCC, ASI, Orientation Services, Athletics, and student clubs and organizations. Contribute to web contents and social media relative to health promotion.
- Work with campus partners to create, develop, implement, and evaluate healthy campus initiatives. Serve on University committees and task forces. Develop and maintain productive relationships with departments and individuals in the University community.
- Serves as member of SHS Committees. Advocate for health promotion activities. Work to ensure standards established by American College Health Association (ACHA) and the health and wellness standards of the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) for health promotion are met.
- Train, mentor, coach and evaluate Peer Health Educators.
QUALIFICATIONS: - Graduation from a 4-year college in an approved program in public health, health education, nutrition social work, social sciences, or a closely related field of study.
- Equivalent to one to two years of progressively responsible health education experience or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.
- Thorough knowledge of health education theories, research, and program assessment; planning, design, implementation, and evaluation of health education programs; and industry standards for the delivery of health education in higher education. General knowledge of, or the ability to learn quickly, current and emerging college age student health problems and existing methods of intervention and control. Working knowledge of the principles of educational and social psychology and how these apply to health education program; and applicable industry standards and practices for health promotion such as those found in the American College Health Association's 'Standards of Practice for Health Promotion in Higher Education
