The Disability Service Specialist is an integral member of the academic success teams on both the Chalon and Doheny campuses and is responsible for developing and managing support services, policies, and processes designed to promote accessibility for courses, programs, and physical environments at MSMU, in compliance with the University's mission and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. The Specialist provides professional leadership in matters of fairness and access for all students with disabilities. They actively spread awareness and promote the work of the Student Resource Center and work collaboratively across departments to help make MSMU a place that welcomes and values students with disabilities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provides ongoing service and case management to students with disabilities for all campuses and online students.??
Identifies students with disabilities who are eligible for services (review documentation, conduct initial interviews) and create an individualized accommodation plan that is communicated to appropriate faculty and staff.??
Ensures students receive necessary accommodations for accessibility as stated in the documentation sent to faculty and staff.??
Collaborates and consults with faculty about how to implement accommodations in particular courses and programs.??
Consults with campus units and departments regarding accessibility issues and laws.??
Assess and provides recommendations on housing accommodations for students and other residents of on-campus housing, including reviewing documentation and determining approval for Emotional Support Animals (ESAs).??
Keeps up to date on research and issues related to students with disabilities in higher education.??
Coordinates accessible text accommodations, and supply accessible formats when necessary.
Coordinates procedures for exam request approvals and proctoring.??
Maintains student records, database, and statistics for Disabilities Services students including school, program, and accommodations required, etc.??
Advises provost, deans, and other department leaders (Academic Support Center, Student Resource Center, Advising, Registrar, Financial Aid, Campus Safety, Housing, others) on issues related to students with disabilities, including institutional compliance with applicable federal and state regulations.??
Speaks regularly in classes and relevant faculty/staff meetings to educate the community about disability issues, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and accessibility.??
Helps MSMU improve its practices and policies to better recognize, affirm, and include people with disabilities in the whole life of the University.??
Serves on campus committees as needed (e.g. Provost Council, Student Intervention Advisory Team, etc.)??
Performs other duties as assigned
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Assists in maintaining University-wide compliance with local, state and Federal regulations and mandates regarding students with disabilities.
2. Coordinates the development, review and evaluation of local DSP policies and procedures. Identifies and determines cause of problems; develops and implements goals and objectives for the DS program in conjunction with the university's strategic plan. Recommends initiatives and changes to improve quality and services.
3. Assumes responsibility for the verification of student's disability, identifying educational limitations resulting from the disability, and Oversees and verifies the determination of eligibility process, administered by DSP staff.
4. Insures that all students' records are maintained at the highest level of confidentiality.
5. Serves as a liaison between the disabled students, the faculty, and the staff regarding accommodations that impact delivery of instruction or service.
8. Provides in-service presentations for the college regarding DSP issues.
9. Develops and monitors the DSP budget and seeks alternative funding through grants and contracts.
10. Through continued study and participation in professional organizations, maintains an understanding of current ideas, research and practices pertaining to the areas of responsibility for this position.
11. Carries out such other duties as may be assigned by the Provost or their designee.
Federal and state statutes and regulations governing accommodation provisions and program accessibility in higher education is essential, as is an understanding of the effects of disabilities, education limitations and reasonable accommodations in higher education; Familiarity with assistive and adaptive technologies and knowledge of the methods and techniques of psycho-educational and neuro-psychological assessments; Disability laws and regulations and current trends in higher education for students with disabilities and the challenges they face is a must.
Experience with applicable laws and policy such as the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
Experience in providing accommodation services for students with disabilities in health education environment.
Abilities and Skills:
Initiate and implement programs and services for students.
Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; provide leadership to work group; exercise effective interpersonal skills.
Understand and work harmoniously with students from diverse and multicultural backgrounds including socio-economic, ethnic, gender, cultural, disability, religious background and sexual orientation of students, faculty and staff.
Ability to address needs of students facing a variety of physical and psychological needs.
Implement new and administer ongoing programs and services for students.
Interpret, apply and explain laws, rules, regulations and guidelines related to program area; ability to maintain accurate program records and manage budget effectively.
Master's degree required, preferably in special education, student development, or equivalent.
5-7 years of progressive administrative experience in higher education
