As an agency of the university community, UWPD provides law enforcement to the largest college and stadium in Washington State. It also provides security to visiting dignitaries and during demonstrations. The Police Department serves a vital role in the safety, security, and success of the University of Washington. Its purpose is to serve and protect the students, staff, faculty and all people and property within the jurisdiction of that community.
Police officers and personnel are on duty 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and their services and facilities are available at all times. The University Police department has the exclusive responsibility to act upon law-enforcement matters and perform police functions for the campus of the University of Washington, Seattle.

OUR DEPARTMENT
The Department serves a daily population of more than 65,000 people by utilizing a Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving approach to law enforcement. Our community is very diverse and includes faculty, staff, students, visitors and patients. UWPD is a diverse workforce of approximately 75 full-time employees including 40 commissioned officers of various ranks, Police Dispatchers, and administrative support staff. The Department operates an Enhanced 911 Communications Center. As university agency, we serve a diverse populace in a diverse environment with students, faculty, and visitors from around the globe and pride ourselves on treating everyone with compassion, care, and understanding; regardless of who they are or from where they are from.
In 2017, UWPD was the first police department in the State of Washington to achieve joint accreditation under the new accreditation program by the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs (WASPC), in addition to its CALEA accreditation. UWPD is proud to be internationally accredited through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). Initially accredited in 2005, the agency has maintained compliance with 462 national standards/best practices, achieved reaccredited status in 2008, 2011, 2014, 2017, 2021 and working on reaccreditation for 2025.
The University of Washington Police Department has an outstanding opportunity for a Campus Police Sergeant to:
Perform patrol duties of the police sergeant
Be responsible for supervising a squad of police officers, security staff or any other supervisory role at the discretion of the Chief of Police or his designee. Incumbents have arrest powers and are required to be commissioned law officers under the regulations of the State of Washington
Assign duties; train and supervise campus police officers assigned to a shift or squad; advise, counsel, and recommend disciplinary and other personnel actions
Evaluate performance of subordinates to determine training requirements and deficiencies
Assist in development and conduct of training programs for campus police
Investigate complaints of disturbance, accidents, stolen property, or criminal activity; conduct internal investigations as assigned
Patrol campus buildings and grounds on foot or by vehicle to maintain security
Issue citations for violations of campus regulations, local, state, and federal laws
Write reports covering activity of squad or shift assigned; review and correct reports of subordinate officers
May perform duties of other Sergeant positions as needed
Requirements include:
· High school graduation or equivalent · Possession of a valid driver's license · Two years of work experience as a police officer or equivalent. · No previous felony convictions. · U.S. citizenship may be required.
A Bachelor's Degree in Police Science may substitute for one year of required experience.
Additional requirements include:
· Must be a commissioned State of Washington law enforcement officer or have the ability to become commissioned within 12 months of employment. · Knowledge of the principles and procedures of modern police science and administration. · Knowledge of all applicable local, state, and federal laws and court decisions. · Knowledge in research, developing and writing police policies. · Ability to successfully communicate and work with citizens and coworkers with diverse backgrounds, goals, and agendas. · Possess and demonstrate integrity and high personal standards of conduct. · Ability to prepare and effectively present both oral and written information concerning the activities and operations within the department. · Ability to maintain confidentiality on sensitive cases and/or projects. · Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, university officials, other governmental authorities, the media, and the public. · Proficient in the use of computers, applicable software, emailing, and scheduling programs. · Flexible and available to work evenings, weekends, holidays as needed.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

· Two years of work experience as a campus police officer OR police officer

2. Candidate Orientation: There will be a candidate orientation scheduled prior to the Multi-Component Testing Process.
Applicants will be assessed based on their application and exam process. The exam process will consist of a written exercise based off a prescribed resource to be read prior to written response. In addition, applicants will be assessed on their performance during the oral exam scored by assessors from outside agencies.
3. Multi-Component Testing Process:
a) Online written exam approximately two weeks prior to Oral Board. Eligible candidates will proceed to the Oral Board. The written exam will account for 45% of the applicant’s overall score. b) Oral Board will be scheduled for August 3, 2022, held at the University of Washington campus, and will account for 45% of the applicant’s overall score. c) Chief’s Interview will account for 10% of the applicant’s overall score, combined with the review of applicant’s background, training, and the last three years of performance evaluations, if applicable. The Chief’s interview will be scheduled: TBD.
4. Each candidate must achieve an overall score of 70% for further consideration in the selection process.
5. A polygraph, comprehensive background investigation, psychological and medical exam will be conducted, if necessary for non-UW Commissioned Candidates.
Reapplication is permitted at any time, except for candidates disqualified for reasons of prior felony convictions or non-correctable selection.
