The College of Business Administration (CoBA) Academic Advisor position guides students in developing and accomplishing educational plans, understand university policies, and other educational options. The academic advisor provides information to students regarding university resources to enhance academic success and education goals such providing information on degrees, minors, and certificates; internships, and study abroad. The position is integral to the office's recruitment and retention efforts through the advisor interactions with students.
a. Performs routine tasks as assigned using existing procedures
b. Coordinates (e.g., compiles, verifies, prepares) materials, information, programs, etc. as assigned
c. Advises/provides support to current and prospective students in various subject areas
d. Performs standard assignments and responsibilities and makes recommendations for improvement/efficiency, resourcing, etc., as necessary
e. Uses existing procedures to solve standard problems
f. Assists in the development and implementation of programs/projects according to plan and/or with guidance
g. Has limited impact on own work team
h. Exchanges straightforward information, asks questions, and checks for understanding
i. Develops working relationships with functional teams
Key Duties Include
a. Assists students in identifying and connecting with other support services including tutoring and academic support, counseling, and co-curricular activities
b. Provide academic advising support to business students at all levels (students in good standing, on probation, exploratory) including assistance with course selection, identification of strengths and barriers to support student success, and working with students to develop effective strategies and plans to achieve their academic and professional goals. Initiate and maintain contact with students regarding academic progress.
c. Implement projects designed to achieve student support service goals such as a new student orientation, coordination of tutoring services, assisting with student recruitment, scholarship selection, and outreach to faculty.
d. Collaborate with the department chairs and faculty for those designated departments to be current on curricular matters and student organizations.
e. Provide accurate and consistent information regarding online plans of study.
f. Assist online students in identifying appropriate campus resources they can use remotely.
g. Participate in organizing and assisting with pre-registration and registration activities for online students.
h. Evaluating transfer course credits and course substitutions.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
a. Possesses conceptual knowledge of theories, practices and procedures within the Student Support function
b. Familiarity with UMSL's MyView system (or similar student information systems, especially Peoplesoft programs), MyConnect or similar scheduling software, and the Degree Audit Report System (DARS) or similar software programs is desired. Knowledge of Microsoft Office is preferred.
c. Makes oneself available and accessible to students and campus community members, interacting with them in such a way that they feel comfortable, at ease, and that their concerns are valued.
d. Helps students develop strategies for success and guides students' decision making.
