POSITION DETAILS
The Counseling Center at BMCC helps students realize their educational, career and personal goals. The Center is staffed with experienced mental health practitioners, who not only work toward reducing the interference of everyday stress on goals and academic success, but who do so with a respect for multicultural issues. The Counseling Center is devoted to helping students succeed.
The Student Psychological Counselor will report to the Director of the Counseling Center and perform the following duties with an emphasis on the mental health of male identified students:
- Conduct Individual counseling sessions which focus on a range of topics pertaining to the mental health of college students
- Facilitate group therapy sessions for students of color.
- Participate in campus-wide retention and persistence outreach and activities with specific focus on students.
- Develop and conduct workshops and seminars for social and academic issues targeting college students.
- Prepare case reports and make recommendations for further action and/or referral.
- Participate in college wide events such as orientations, outreach, retention initiatives, and psycho-educational workshops.
- Provide assistance with major college-wide events such as commencement, orientation, registration, and honors convocation.
- Serve as a consultant to campus colleagues for students??? academic and behavioral cases.
- Work location of assignments will vary depending upon the needs of the department and will be a mix of remote and in person work.
- Participate in professional development to stay up to date with current issues.
- Some evening hours are required. Some weekend hours may be required.
QUALIFICATIONS
A Doctoral degree in Psychology to include Ph.D. and Psy.D. programs or a Master's degree in an appropriate discipline for personal or psychological counseling (social work) and a New York State license as a mental health practitioner (psychology, social work, mental health counseling).
In addition, six years' of postbaccalaureate experience is required for all candidates.
The preferred candidate will have:
- Experience in a college or university counseling setting with experience in working with male students of color strongly preferred.
- A strong record of successfully developing and conducting workshops for students, targeting male college students of color.
- A successful record of individual and group counseling for male students of color.
- Experience and interest in working with non-traditional college students and historically underserved communities.
- Experience providing academic counseling or support services to students.
- Experience with bilingual student populations.
- Experience with short-term, brief, and/or solution-focused interventions.
Vaccine mandate:
Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.
