Student and Campus Life (SCL) inspires transformation in all Cornell students on their journey of individual, academic and personal evolution. Our division is comprised of leading student affairs experts who support our campus on pressing student life matters including public service, health, wellness, social justice, residential living, food services, sports, recreation, career services, and student activities and organizations including sorority and fraternity life. We provide support and services to roughly 25,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students on multiple campuses in the U.S. and abroad.
As a part of the SCL Office of the Vice President's unit, the SCL Facilities team supports the student campus experience, by ensuring safe, clean, and operational spaces for students to live, eat, recreate, connect, and engage with each other. With this mission in mind, the team is focused on helping our customers and end-users navigate critical decisions regarding the use and maintenance of their space. They do this through analyzing risks and associated costs, exploring additional services that add value, considering safety and security factors, and ensuring business continuity. Members of this group are passionate about helping customers, think critically about how small decisions can have large impacts, and have a knack for integrating people and physical places. This team is literally the "foundation" upon which the student experience here at Cornell is built.
The Assistant Director of Project Management serves in a leadership role that manages the planning and execution of critical capital construction and infrastructure projects within the Student and Campus Life (SCL) portfolio individually and through the management of two project coordinators. This role will participate in development and planning of construction and renovation projects, including short-term and long-term planning, determining needs and providing guidance related to contractor selection and project expectations. The Assistant Director, will collaborate with stakeholders on budget development while monitoring expenses against budget and recommending strategies for cost efficiencies including recommending purchasing strategies and delivery approaches. In addition, this role will also help to serve as liaison to central facilities, while promoting partnership with key stakeholders to ensure work is completed in accordance with Cornell processes and strategic planning, while advocating and prioritizing needs of the SCL portfolio.
A successful Assistant Director of Project Management will possess full spectrum of project coordination and construction management experience and leverage that knowledge to find creative solutions that support SCL business continuity, avoid unnecessary impact on operations and expedite the needs of the Division. Working independently and collaboratively, the Assistant Director must demonstrate stellar customer service management to make complex project issues understandable for clients and help foster strong partnerships with key stakeholders as well as drive projects to a successful conclusion in a collaborative and politically sensitive manner. This role will also need to demonstrate solid decision making, critical thinking skills, effective professional judgement and have the ability to maintain effective communication and appropriate prioritization while managing multiple priorities to pro-actively manage projects, anticipate issues, and minimize impacts on quality, budget, schedule, or campus/college/unit/department.
Required Qualifications:
Professional bachelor's degree in architecture, engineering, or relevant field with specific PM experience as well as a minimum of five (5) years of PM experience encompassing Project Planning & Development, Procurement and Contract Management, Design Management, Construction Management and Closeout and/or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in commercial and institutional design and construction is required.
Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, and demonstrated ability to build and maintain positive interpersonal relationships with internal and external stakeholders
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Excel, Word, Power Point, and MS Project is required. Ability to gain working knowledge of proprietary project management software (eBuilder), for all Cornell University project-related activities. Working knowledge of NYS Building Codes, ADA, other building industry regulations and standards.
Experience with CAD software and extensive experience reading blueprints and plans, with the ability to explain them to others.
Prefered Qualifications:
Advanced degree or additional professional experience in a related field
PM capital project experience on a University campus is preferred.
Proficiency with electronic project scheduling software. CMAA Construction Manager Certification or Project Management Institute (PMI) Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification.
Experience managing staff desirable, but not required.
This position is located in Ithaca, New York. The successful applicant will be expected to work primarily on campus, but would be allowed some flexibility to work remotely. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
