Under the general supervision of the Director and Associate Director of the Office of Pre-Health Advisement of the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences, the Student Services Advisor I plans and participates in programs, provides services and individual/group advisement to current students and alumni, assists pre-health students with needs and supports those seeking admission to medical and other health professional programs.
The candidate will provide students, post-bacs and alumni with the resources and support to develop the competencies required to be competitive applicants for their chosen health professional schools (medical school, dental school, veterinary school, etc). Â The ideal candidate will support office leadership and campus partners to reimagine our approach to the pre-health curriculum with a focus on recruiting, retaining, and closing achievement gaps among underrepresented populations.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide pre-health advisement to USC students either remotely or in person
Assist in the development and delivery of workshops for pre-health students
Support the Universityâs pre-health population with health career-related programming (intern and externship opportunities, clinical and research opportunities for those interested in healthcare careers including personal and professional development)
Create and/or edit materials related to appropriate educational and curricular planning
In collaboration with existing programs and initiative, promote the pre-health advising office and recruit students, especially from underrepresented groups, to pursue health professional programs
In collaboration with directors and student workers, oversee the social media strategy & implementation of the pre-health advising office
Serve as a professional resource for pre-health student organizations at USC
Maintain student records and files of all advising sessions to track and report outcomes
Serve as liaison to various college and professional school departments
Provide support for the Dornsife Orientation experience for first-year students, including orientation advising and welcome week activitiesÂ Â Â
Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of marketing programs to increase student awareness of and participation in pre-professional services.
Establish professional growth and development by participating in educational programs and professional organizations
Represent the Dornsife Office of Pre-Health Advising at various events and lead occasional presentations
Provide general administrative student support services
Some evening and weekend hours required
Opportunities to attend conferences and professional development seminars
A Bachelorâs degree
1 year higher education experience
General knowledge of health care careers and health professional schools
Experience in academics, career programs and/or student services
Demonstrated experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
Ability to learn new tools and systems quickly
Willing to provide career and/or academic counseling both in person and online
Ability to establish relationships of trust with a diverse multi-cultural population including parents, students, school officials, staff, and faculty
Strong presentation skills for both large and small groups
Ability to handle confidential information with discretion
Salary Range: $28.18-$30 per hour
