The Assistant Director creates and carries out campus programs designed for the support of international students, as well as the integration of these students in the broader campus while strengthening the entire international student and scholar community. This integral staff member maintains excellent rapport with the international campus community and works to creatively design and implement new programs that encourage international student integration, support, engagement and community building. This position also has significant responsibility for immigration management and compliance, including advising international students. The successful candidate for this position will be able to work well independently and in a team environment, will have a passion for working with students from diverse backgrounds, and enjoy creative and collaborative programming. After-hours (night and/or weekend hours) are required. International Student & Scholar Services is situated in the larger pillar of Diversity & Inclusion, within the Division of Student Affairs. Diversity and Inclusion houses International Student & Scholar Services, Lesbian, Gay Bisexual Trans* and Queer Resources, Multicultural Student Services, Religious and Spiritual Life, and the Women's Resource Center.
Job Duties:
I. Programming and Support
1. Creates and carries out new or continuing educational and cultural programs for the greater campus, including marketing and publicizing events using social media, etc.
2. Leads Fremont Scholar program including leadership seminar, placements and ongoing community development.
3. Develops and carries out programming directed specifically toward strengthening and supporting the international community.
a. Provides or coordinates need-based services such as trips to the Department of Motor Vehicles and Social Security Administration.
b. Provides outreach, support, and advises cultural student organizations, communicating about upcoming events and assisting with programming related to ISSS and/or diversity initiatives.
c. Reviews international student retention and success and develops data and solutions to emerging issues.
4. Serves as liaison to Residential Education.
a. Works in consultation with Residential Education staff to communicate break opportunities, storage, and meal accessibility and collaboration/oversight with regard to GC3 and RA training
5. Co-facilitates Global Connections, Cultures & Community (GC3) student leader recruitment, selection, and training, as well as further developing mentorship capacity within this group.
6. Assists in the planning and execution of GC3, including reservations, outreach, and program logistics, assuring an intentional and supportive transition for all participants, with close collaboration among various campus
partners.
7. Manages recruitment, pairing, and programming for the International Friendship Program.
II. Advising and Immigration Compliance
1. Serves as a Designated School Official and Alternate Responsible Officer in SEVIS
a. Advises students on immigration, employment, personal & cultural issues
b. Maintains current knowledge of immigration regulations pertinent to F1 status and J1 status.
c. Utilizes TerraDotta software for SEVIS reporting, file notes and case management
d. Issues I-20 and DS-2019 documents; sign documents for travel purposes
e. Serves as primary adviser for student employment applications including CPT, OPT
2. Coordinates international mailings for new student document issuance as needed
3. Supports international students through the use of Sprintax or similar tax software
III. Other Duties and Outreach
1. In extended absence of the Director, act in accordance to maintain office functions
2. May supervise student employees.
3. Maintains professional relationships with Admissions, the Center for Career Advancement, the Office of Global and Off-Campus Education, Financial Aid, Athletics, Housing and Residential Education, other student affairs professionals, and faculty members as collaborators and colleagues.
4. Must be comfortable driving university vehicles, which may include sedans, minivans or 15-passenger omnibuses.
5. Performs other duties as assigned.
IV. Meetings & Professional Development
1. Regular meetings with the Director of International Student & Scholar Services.
2. Attends departmental staff meetings (Diversity & Inclusion area).
3. Attends monthly Division of Student Affairs meetings.
4. Attends other meetings as required.
5. As available, attends one external conference related to the field and attend other on-campus professional development opportunities as appropriate.
Minimum Qualifications:
-Master's degree
-One year of related program coordination and/or advising experience in International Student or Scholar Services or closely related experience working with marginalized college student, immigrant and/or foreign populations
-Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, and Google Suite with the ability and interest to learn other software as needed
-Valid U.S. drivers license, with a clean driving record for a minimum of two years
-Strong intercultural understanding and interest, and excellent interpersonal communication skills
-U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residence required to serve as DSO [Designated School Official] and ARO [Alternate Responsible Officer] as mandated by Department of Homeland Security and Department of State
-The successful candidate must have a desire and ability to work with and communicate effectively with those from other cultures. They must also have an awareness of issues relating to socioeconomic status, gender identity and expression, sexuality, race and ethnicity, ability, national origin, religious and interfaith, and the relationship between power and privilege.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in International or Comparative Education or Higher Education
Multilingual ability
Experience having lived, worked, and/or studied overseas
Trajectory/interest in a career in the field of international education
Knowledge/experience in SEVIS RTI, TerraDotta Adobe Indesign, Adobe Spark, mailing/newsletter platforms
Experience advising/supporting faculty & staff scholars, or in scholar immigration compliance
Physical Demands:
May occasionally lift up to 25 lbs. Generally seated work. At times, significant time spent on computer.
