The Dean of Enrollment directs the strategic enrollment activities of the University of Maine at Fort Kent (UMFK). They will provide oversight and leadership to all enrollment functions, with direct responsibility for admissions and marketing, with shared responsibility for retention. In addition, the Dean of Enrollment will work strategically with colleagues in financial aid, athletics, student life, and academic program leadership to ensure that UMFK's enrollment goals are reached in a manner consistent with the university's mission and strategic framework which align with fostering diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). The Dean employs strong skills in leadership, communication, budget management, and program development in the planning, implementation and assessment of UMFK's recruitment and retention efforts. The successful candidate will also work closely with the campus president, faculty and staff to facilitate synergetic activities among the University of Maine System (UMS) campuses that support Unified Accreditation and innovative degree programs.
The Dean provides supervision of the admissions personnel, the marketing and communications personnel, and the community education personnel; a strong working relationship with the Athletic Director; management and employment of data to inform planning and strategy; input into communication strategies including print and electronic media; and management of a highly personalized application review process, including significant one-on-one contact with prospective students and their families.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Leads university marketing to support the mission and inform key constituencies of UMFK’s appeals, achievements, and priorities.
- Coordinates areas relevant to recruitment, building and drawing upon capacity through the university, including admissions, marketing, financial aid, faculty, staff, and students. Develops a strong working relationship with these colleagues as well as external partners, to develop and implement effective enrollment operations.
- Works with the cabinet and other personnel to develop, implement, and evaluate processes for enrollment and appropriate research techniques, data resources, and information technologies to enhance marketing and enrollment management.
- Creates pathways for high school students taking concurrent enrollment courses to matriculate into UMFK degree programs.
- Designs, implements, and maintains a comprehensive multi-faceted student recruitment
- Provides regular and collaborative input into the development of printed and electronic student recruitment materials to ensure that they are effective, updated regularly, and cost efficient.
- Builds and coordinates opportunities for faculty, staff, students, and alumni to participate in the student recruitment process.
- Collaborates with other offices to ensure a seamless transition from acceptance to enrollment.
- Ensures that the Admissions Office operates with smooth efficiency, maintaining a student-centric atmosphere that is user-friendly, service-oriented, and welcoming.
- Recruits, develops, supervises, and evaluates professional, classified, and student staff members. Fosters an environment in which employees function comfortably as a team; feel respected and valued; are encouraged and motivated to develop and expand their training and expertise, and all are held accountable for doing their part to achieve enrollment goals.
- Engages in ongoing professional development by participating in relevant workshops, conferences, etc. Maintains membership in relevant professional organizations.
- Develops and creatively manages the annual Admissions and Marketing budget, ensuring that expenses do not exceed established parameters and that all appropriate fiscal efficiencies are implemented and achieved.
- Provides oversight and direction for on-campus admission functions such as campus tours, tele-counseling, college fairs, open houses, acceptance days, and other recruitment events.
- Reviews admissions applications and makes decisions based on the guidelines and entrance requirements established by the University.
- Interviews and counsels prospective students and their parents.
- Maintains current knowledge of UMFK's curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular programming and student opportunities.
- Works closely with the faculty to promote the various degree programs and secure faculty support for recruitment activities.
- Serves on designated UMFK and UMS committees.
- Works closely with Student Financial Services, Advancement and Early College to award potential scholarships and promotes criteria to attract potential students.
- Provides enrollment and other data-based reports to internal and external constituent groups and agencies for planning, accountability, and compliance purposes.
- Organizes, plans, and executes fall and spring recruitment travel.
- Co-chairs the Retention and Student Success Council.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position supervises the Admissions Counselors, an Administrative Specialist, the Director of Community Education, and the Director of Marketing and Communications. Tasks included in this supervisory role are recruiting, hiring, training, developing, scheduling, and evaluating job performance.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
- This position is a direct report to the President.
- This position has a dotted line reporting relationship to the Athletic Director.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Comprehensive working knowledge of current best practices in admissions operations, programs, and services.
- Comprehensive working knowledge of current admissions trends, issues, and strategies.
- Working knowledge of current student recruitment strategies and techniques, including those involving web-based applications and delivery.
- Understanding of higher education curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular objectives and programming.
- Proven planning and program development skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent team leadership and management skills, including ability to evaluate employees and facilitate their training and professional development.
- Ability to work effectively with a variety of internal and external constituencies.
- Ability to effectively utilize computer information systems.
- Ability to manage a balanced budget and allocate fiscal resources creatively and wisely.
- Ability and willingness to travel, including air travel as necessary and appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Doctoral Degree preferred; Master’s Degree required.
- Five years of progressively responsible admissions and marketing experience, including supervisory experience.
- A valid driver's license and ability to travel.
- Advanced degree is preferred.
POSITION TYPE: This is a twelve-month, base budget, full-time fiscal year appointment, contingent upon successful performance.
WORK SCHEDULE: Normal University of Maine work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Due to the nature of this position the employee will periodically work evenings, early mornings, weekends and holidays. In consultation with the supervisor the employee with establish regular office hours and adjust the work schedule as appropriate.
WORK ENVIORNMENT: Some travel will be required. Work is performed in a typical office environment. Work can be fast-paced in nature and the employee may find it necessary to alter work focus to meet demand. Effective communication with internal and external constituents is recurrent and essential to success.
