Job Duties:
Responsibilities of this position include providing individual academic guidance and counseling to students on academic matters such as selection of a major area of study, course selection, and academic performance; guiding students in development of decision-making skills and providing instruction through intervention workshops; and creating programs, workshops, and other initiatives to enhance students' academic performance from a prevention and intervention perspective. The selected candidate will also coordinate the academic orientation of new students and/or new majors and support the university's goals through developing and implementing a student development approach to academic advising; meet and advise students and parents during visitation days and freshman orientation; and provide academic advising and mentoring to undergraduate students in technology systems, computer science, construction management, and engineering. This position may be responsible for advising traditional, nontraditional, distance education, and/or transfer students and will utilize a variety of methods for advising, such as phone, computer, face to face, and printed materials. This position will report to the Executive Director of the Student Success Center in the College of Engineering and Technology.
Academic Advising- 80%
- Oversee an active and dedicated ECU student load as professional academic advisor comprised of up to 400 students in dedicated programs in CET.
- Maintain confidentiality and all university expectations of a professional academic advisor, including policies, program options, and student pathways.
- Provide accurate guidance and record keeping for student population to guide their path to graduation.
- Work as part of the academic advising team within the student success center.
Prospective Recruitment/Engagement- 10%
- Assist CET SSC with outreach and recruitment endeavors as they relate to the ICT, IDIS programs and TSYS department.
- Assist with recruitment and outreach events, such as Admitted Students Day, Pirates Aboard, Open House.
- Provide information and assistance as requested by Executive Director and AD of Outreach and Recruitment regarding program specific outreach and needs.
- Contribute with other advisors to new student and transfer Orientation.
Project Management/Administration/Leadership – 10%
- Participate on committees in SSC or across ECU in support of the SSC and Academic Advising.
- Working with the Executive Director and AD of Outreach and Recruitment to provide assistance with general CET community college recruitment, outreach, and collaboration.
- Track interactions and activities related to position, notably degree works plans, course needs, projections, and other potential student issues.
- Oversee special projects and other SSC and Advising initiatives independently.

Organizational Unit Overview:
Advising staff within the Student Success Center are responsible for academic policy, progress and ECU and major procedures. Advisors serve as academic department and campus liaisons. Advisors keep abreast of changes in ECU policy and curriculum through training sessions, continuing education, and higher education coursework as well as belong to appropriate professional organizations. They attend conferences to keep abreast of newest advising trends and implement new technology to assist in management of advising. Advisors have a multiple of roles in helping students, from pre-admission, summer orientation, to working throughout the time it takes a student to graduate. Academic advisors share career and professional recommendations and/or resources, as well as a multiple of resources to support the student academically and developmentally. Relationships start with pre-admissions (occasionally) and summer orientation for students and continued through graduation.
