Staff Counselor- CVM/SOD
Student Counseling Services, Twin Cities Campus
Position information:
The University of Minnesota’s Student Counseling Services (SCS), College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), and the School of Dentistry (SOD) are seeking a licensed mental health professional to fill an embedded counseling position within the two programs. The counselor will provide mental health and personal counseling to all types of students within the programs offered at CVM and SOD, hereafter referred to as “learners”. Additionally, the counselor will work closely with SCS staff, and staff, faculty, and learners in CVM and SOD to provide consultations and educational programming. The counselor will have office space within CVM and SOD, while formally reporting to Student Counseling Services. This position may work some evening hours in order to support access for learners in CVM and SOD.

Main Responsibilities
-Provide individual counseling to learners to address mental health and academic concerns
-Provide assessment and diagnostic services related to developing effective treatment plans and making appropriate referrals
-Serve as an advocate and as a liaison in the referral of learners to on and off-campus resources
-Provide consultation services for learners, faculty, and staff
-Conduct and collaborate on psycho-educational workshops and preventative outreach for learners, faculty, and staff
-Collaborate on and support learner student holistic wellbeing programming with program staff overseeing student and resident affairs/life within CVM and SOD Office of Student & Resident Affairs staff
-Engage in SOD and CVM committees and other work related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and wellbeing initiatives
-Other duties as assigned
About the position:
Provide counseling to currently enrolled SOD and CVM learners. (60%)
- Provide short-term mental health, personal, and academic success counseling to learners through individual appointments
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in accordance with Student Counseling Services policy
- Refer learners to campus-wide services and programming based on their long-term care needs
- Serve as a liaison between health and wellbeing resources (Student Counseling Services, Boynton Health, Care Program, etc.) and School of Dentistry and CVM learners
- Develop and implement new, innovative models of counseling service delivery (e.g., create group counseling offerings if the need arises)
Provide outreach, programming, and training for learners on topics of mental health and academic success. (20%)
- Create and facilitate programs and presentations in coordination with program staff and faculty on topics relevant to learner mental health and academic success
- Provide mental health training and serve as a resource for learners participating in the SOD Wellbeing Advocate peer education program
- Identify programming needs for learners based on trends ascertained through counseling conversations
- Promote relevant campus-wide services and programming hosted by campus partners (Student Counseling Services, Boynton Health, Disability Resource Center, Center for Spirituality & Healing, or others) to learners
Participate in Student Counseling Services staff meetings, supervision, and trainings. (10%)
- Attend staff meetings, case consultation, and other administrative meetings deemed relevant to the role
- Complete continuing education requirements as required by licensing boards and as relevant to the work of the embedded role
Serve as a resource on learner mental health issues for SOD and CVM faculty and staff with concerns regarding their learners. (5%)
- Serve as a resource to faculty and staff who identify learners needing counseling or crisis intervention
- Create and facilitate tailored workshops and presentations on relevant topics concerning learner mental health for SOD and CVM faculty and staff
Serve as a resource for administration/leaders on trends and data related to SOD and CVM learner health (5%)
- Engage in program evaluation and data collection efforts related to the effectiveness of embedded services
- Engage in assessment of SOD and CVM learner mental health trends
- Report learner trends back to SCS, SOD and CVM to advise on learner needs
- Offer feedback on system-level issues impacting learner mental health and wellbeing
Appointment details:
This position is eligible to be hired as a 100% full-time equivalent (FTE) and is eligible for the comprehensive University of Minnesota benefits package. The hours per week will be determined at the time of hire, in mutual agreement between the finalist, the supervisor, CVM and the SOD's Office of Student and Resident Affairs, and the employee will work those number of hours consistently.This appointment is eligible for hybrid work (telehealth/remote and in-office) dependent upon the arrangements for service delivery agreed upon between the employee and SCS, CVM, and SOD.
Salary range: $70,000-90,000 for a 100% FTE appointment, dependent upon experience and qualifications.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelors degree and eight years of experience or a masters degree with six years of experience or a terminal degree in a mental health field and two years of experience
- Independent licensure as a social worker (LICSW), psychologist (LP), Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC), or marriage and family therapist in Minnesota (LMFT)
- Evidence of sustained knowledge and experience working with culturally diverse populations
- Demonstrated experience providing culturally-responsive and anti-oppressive counseling services to historically marginalized identities or underrepresented clients (eg. BIPOC/Multicultural, LGBTQIA+, international students, first generation students).
- Interest in engaging fully in the typical work of a college counseling center, including short term counseling, group counseling, crisis work, outreach, consultation and training
Preferred qualifications
- Prior experience working with health profession learners (eg. dentistry, nursing, vet med, pharmacy, etc.) and/or experience with science-based academic disciplines
- Experience providing mental health counseling services to learners in a higher education setting
- Completion of APA accredited internship
- Training and experience in therapeutic psychological assessment
- Vocational, career, or academic counseling or coaching experience
