Job Description:
The Director is responsible for the day to day functioning of the Health Scholars Program (HES) a program created in 2020 to increase the diversity of students entering the master of public health program and to equip students to be transformative leaders. Students are drawn from three candidate pools: Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic Serving Institutions, and Rhode Islanders. The Director serves as a resource for prospective and enrolled HES participants and manages all elements of the program, including student support, the planning of workshops, lectures, and leadership experiences that engage experts from the University and beyond. The Director will host speakers and presenters and will lead and facilitate discussions among the Health Equity Scholars.Â
The Director will interact closely with internal stakeholders, including faculty and colleagues from various Brown departments, and particularly from the School of Professional Studies. The Director will coordinate and collaborate with the Office for Diversity and Inclusion at the School of Public Health where appropriate. Â The Director also works closely with Advancement and Alumni Affairs to assist with fundraising, expand alumni engagement in the HES program, and represent the program to potential donors.
External stakeholder management will include the recruitment and stewardship of a mentor network. This network will be made up of professionals who will be invited to mentor the HES and will be paired with the Scholars based on the Scholarsâ™ academic and professional interests.Â
Section 3: Major Responsibilities
Â
1.   Major Responsibility:  Program Management (40%)
Supporting Actions:Â
The Director is responsible for the day to day functioning of the Health Equity Scholars program. This includes financial management, such as contributing to the creation of the annual budget and managing the programâ™s expenses. This position is responsible for representing the HES program internally through interaction with appropriate faculty and staff. The Director will manage a network of contacts at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic-Serving Institutions, and local Rhode Island colleges, using this network to identify students, potential mentors, and opportunities for greater collaboration. This position also has responsibility for the successful planning and execution of events for the HES cohort, including lectures, workshops, etc. The Director is a resource for the HES and will help to connect them to academic, career, and other support services as needed. The Director will host speakers and guests to HES events, and will facilitate discussion sessions with the Scholars as needed.Â
2.   Major Responsibility:  Program Strategy (25%)
Supporting Actions:Â
The HES program continues to expand eligibility in order to serve a greater number of students from a wider network of minority-serving institutions. The Director will oversee the program growth and contribute to the strategy for ongoing expansion, including budgeting, identifying target populations, contributing to recruitment efforts, and planning for rollout with relevant departments.Â
The Director will also look for novel opportunities for strategic partnerships, including internships and community engagement placement for the Health Equity Scholars, and creative networking opportunities for the students.Â
3.   Major Responsibility:    Student Support (20%)
Supporting Actions:Â
The Director will work closely with the leadership of the MPH program, the School of Professional Studies, key faculty, and colleagues in the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Office to ensure that HES students are welcomed and oriented to life at Brown. This position will help with the creation of orientation and welcome activities, and with ongoing activities throughout the academic year. The Director will be a resource for the Scholars, meeting with them one-on-one at least once per semester and connecting them to necessary resources. The Director will collaborate with other support providers to ensure that Scholars are positioned for success.Â
This position will manage the formal HES mentor network and connect students with mentors who can support their professional interests. Additionally, the Director will create structured networking opportunities so that Scholars are able to meet and learn from a wide variety of public health professionals and leaders.Â
4.   Major Responsibility:    Outreach (15%)
Supporting Actions:Â
The Director will collaborate with student recruitment efforts, including contributing to marketing/communications and leading outreach to target institutions. This position works closely with the Advancement office to support fundraising efforts by sharing information about potential donors, providing updates on student progress and alumni success. Â This position will continually work to grow the HES network, identifying potential mentors, speakers, and other leaders. The Director will also help to engage Brown University and Brown SPH alumni in the HES program. Finally, this position will, over time, build and manage an alumni network of the Health Equity Scholars so that Brown is able to track their career progress and continue to engage them in the HES program.
Section 4: Decisions Position is Free to Make
The Director is able to make decisions related to both the day-to-day operations of the Health Equity Scholars program and to the programâ™s larger strategic vision, including:
â—Â Â Â Staffing decisions, priority-setting, program expenses
â—Â Â Â Student recruitment strategies
â—Â Â Â Changing or updating program content
â—Â Â Â Collaborations with other Brown schools or departments
Some examples of decisions for which the Director will provide advice to others include:
â—Â Â Â Strategic approaches to new partners or supporters
â—Â Â Â Student support (financial, academic, etc.)
â—Â Â Â Internal and external communications
Section 5: Dimensions
The Health Equity Scholars program will enroll up to twenty students each academic year of the 2-year MPH program for a total of approximately 40 students. The Scholars will participate in bi-weekly leadership development and enrichment events. Lectures and networking events will occur quarterly, at a minimum. The Director may also plan and participate in annual events that involve travel, such as Advancement events, an annual mentor/Scholar retreat, and site visits to Washington DC, the NIH, or the Centers for Disease Control.Â
Section 6: Job Qualifications and Competencies
Education and Experience
Bachelorâ™s Degree with equivalent combination of education and experience.Â
Six (6) to eight (8) years of relevant experience
Masterâ™s degree preferred
Background in leadership development, education, training, or student servicesÂ
Experience and comfort with small group facilitation, presentations, and public speaking
Creative thinker with experience in program design and development
Demonstrated ability to work both collaboratively and independently, and to exercise sound judgment.
