Job Summary: | The Biology Major Program is seeking a motivated, caring individual to join our advising team. The Biology Major at UW-Madison is a cross-college undergraduate major offered to students in both the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and the College of Letters & Science. For administrative purposes, the major is housed in the departments of Bacteriology (CALS) and Integrative Biology (L&S). The advisors serve students in both colleges, though for personnel purposes their positions are formally located within the Department of Bacteriology. The Biology Major academic advisors serve approximately 1,200 students. The Biology Major is designed for students who are interested in a broad exposure to the concepts and methodologies of the biological sciences, as well as those interested in a more specific subdiscipline. There is currently one specialized option within the major, in Evolutionary Biology. |
Responsibilities: | Engages students in decision making processes and promotes appropriate and responsible choices on academic matters such as course selection and degree requirements. Maintains appropriate confidentiality, updates student advising records, and contributes to the development and delivery of academic advising related events and programs. Works to ensure students receive accurate, timely, and holistic advising services in support of promoting student success, retention, and program completion. Strives to create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive work environment. - 10% Receives, processes, and responds to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures
- 40% Serves as a main point of contact for students and provides information about educational options and academic requirements; assists with identifying and assessing interests, skills, and values to match appropriate field of study/career options, and refers students to appropriate institutional resources
- 5% Implements academic advising events such as workshops, panel discussions, and guest speakers
- 10% Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records and processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies
- 10% Maintains expertise with advised curriculum and may assist in developing and recommending exceptions for policy and curriculum
- 10% Proactively engages students as needed
- 5% Participates in the campus-wide advising community providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising, recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college
- 5% Use university data resources to anticipate and identify advising needs of assigned advisee cohort. Participate in Biology Major assessment and evaluation activities.
- 5% Represent and promote the major at events. Participate in the creation, updating, and/or distribution of print, electronic, and other information pertaining to the major, including promotional materials.

Education: | Required Bachelor's Degree Undergraduate or graduate education in the biological sciences and/or additional background in student advising, educational or counseling psychology, or another field related to job responsibilities are desirable. |
Qualifications: | The successful candidate will demonstrate: - Excellent interpersonal and listening skills; a commitment to diversity; and a student-focused approach - Strong organizational and time-management skills, including the ability to problem-solve, multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines; attention to accuracy and detail - A collegial style, with the ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students at a large research university, as well as prospective students and their families - Professional written and oral communication skills; ability to organize and communicate complex information effectively - Experience building cross-campus or comparable relationships desired - Previous experience in academic advising, student services or related field preferred |
