OverviewReporting to the Director of Transfer, Veteran, and Non-Traditional Student Programs, the assistant director will create, implement, and maintain programs and initiatives in the Emma Bloomberg Center for Access and Opportunity that support and advance the transfer program and its expansion. Responsibilities include working with the director on all facets of transfer recruitment, enrollment, placement, advising and mentoring, academic and co-curricular programming, internal record-keeping and external communications, and strategic planning and assessment. The assistant director will participate in the Credit Audit Committee to determine standing and transfer courses, work with departments to place transfers at the appropriate point in the undergraduate curriculum, coordinate with campus partners to accommodate nontraditional student needs, hire, train, and provide supervision for the Transfer Mentor Program, and provide intensive advising and mentoring to the growing transfer population. In addition to these administrative responsibilities, the assistant director will teach one section of the 200-level Writing Seminar, customized for transfer students, each year. As part of the broader Emma Bloomberg Center mission, the assistant director will contribute to the To, Through, and Beyond programming in various ways appropriate to their expertise, including participation in the Freshman Scholars Institute each summer.
ResponsibilitiesUnder supervision of the director, assists in the admission, recruitment, enrollment, and curricular placement of new transfer students each spring and summer. In coordination with the Credit Audit Committee, helps review admission files to determine placement, transferred courses, and general education requirements met for expanding number of enrolled transfers. With director, leads advising conversations with incoming students in early summer, and takes lead on coordinating with academic departments to consider transferred courses for department prerequisites and requirements. Works with directors of studies and faculty advisers to advise incoming students on course selection and other academic goals.
Assists director in coordinating with Housing, Dining, Financial Aid, the Registrar, and the Residential Colleges for student early arrival in August. In coordination with program director, facilitates new transfer students early arrival and co-leads all Transfer Pre-orientation events. Works with program director to maintain high-touch advising and mentoring practices as transfer enrollment increases. Hires, trains, and supervises upperclass Transfer Mentors, and serves as staff mentor for Princeton Transfer Association (PTA). In coordination with Transfer Mentors and PTA, develops and leads co-curricular program calendar. In coordination with Admission, participates in recruitment events to enhance program visibility. Teaches one section of 200-level transfer student writing seminar in the fall.
Works with director on ongoing enhancement and evolution of the transfer program, with immediate emphasis on implementing new policies and initiatives in response to 2020-21 program review. Develops workflow practices to account for program scaling, and coordinates with the Registrar and Office of Information Technology to build and revise internal advising, tracking, and assessment resources. Works with director on public web presence, in coordination with Admission and the Emma Bloomberg Center's other programs.
As a core staff member within the Emma Bloomberg Center for Access and Opportunity, the assistant director participates broadly in the development and execution of all “To, Through, and Beyond” programs and initiatives during the academic year and the summer. The successful candidate's expertise may be drawn upon to coordinate with campus partners, advise and mentor students, hire, train, and supervise undergraduate and graduate workers in the Center, develop curriculum and outreach programming, and serve as a program ambassador for wider Center goals. The assistant director will work with the program director to play an important liaison role vis-à-vis Princeton's key national partners in transfer, veteran, and non-traditional student affairs, including the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, the American Talent Initiative, The National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students, the Warrior-Scholar Project, and Student Veterans of America.
QualificationsEssential Qualifications:
- Doctorate
- 3+ years work experience
- Demonstrated commitment to the value of diversity and inclusion, interpreted broadly, in higher education.
- Experience working with transfer program's target populations, including but not limited to first-generation, lower income students, military-affiliated students, community college students, and adult learners.
- Teaching and administrative experience at an accredited institution of higher education.
- Experience developing and leading academic and co-curricular programming for a diverse student body.
- Ability to take initiative, work autonomously, and employ sound judgement, while also demonstrating desire and ability to thrive within the diverse expertise and overlapping portfolios of the Emma Bloomberg Center's team.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, and ability to convey Center's mission to diverse constituencies.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Training and experience teaching writing-intensive courses
- Ph.D. in academic discipline represented at Princeton, ideally in a STEM field
