Job Description: GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reporting to the Director of the Adult Education Center (AEC), the Academic Advisor assist ESOL program participants at the Hyannis Center setting in achieving student academic and career goals. This is a part-time evening advisor position that requires meeting with students Monday and Wednesday evenings between 6:30 and 9:30 PM. Classes and related activities will be Face-to-Face/in-person for the 2022-2023 Academic Year. Advisors will be required to pivot to remote advising if health concerns warrant a change.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
- Meets Monday & Wednesday evenings with ESOL students individually and in groups throughout the year to increase retention rates, and develop, assimilate, and document the FY22 ESOL Advisor Curriculum.
- Monitors 80% attendance rate for each student and follows up with students and staff regarding absences in an ongoing effort to retain students in the DESE Adult Education program and reduce barriers to attending.
- Uses SharePoint to evaluate student attendance data on an ongoing basis throughout the year.
- Helps provide guidance and transition support to assess, advise, and assist student's interests, strengths, skills, and life and career goals. Assists students with next steps to help students achieve their goals.
- Uses information technology including entering and manipulating information in a database format, and proficiency in Zoom, Moodle, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Uses evidence based best practices associated with online learning pedagogy (e.g., frequent communication, active learning practices) as well as developing and using multimedia (audio, video, podcasts, online textbooks, etc.) to enhance remote and/or face to face student engagement in active and collaborative workforce exploration activities that support student success.
- Participates in student intake, standardized assessment, and orientation of learners in cooperation with teaching staff. After August start date, Advisor will conduct orientation and goal setting for new students at the beginning of each month as empty seats are filled, ensuring that students understand program expectations as stated during orientation.
- Works with students and teachers and/or appropriate administrative staff regarding student or classroom issues, with the exception of instructional issues, which Advisor should bring to the Director.
- Determines student's need for community services and contacts Outstationing Advisor or Director to make appropriate referrals as needed.
- Maintains a liaison role with CCCC offices/departments, including PACT, food pantry, admissions office, CALM, library, gym, campus safety, and other support/counseling programs that benefit adult learners.
- Attends and participates in monthly ESOL staff meetings and monthly Advisor team meetings.
- Participates in at least 12 hours/year of professional development training for advising, assessment, orientation, and evolving DESE mandates and approved by the Director.
- Facilitates workshops and guest speakers on education, training, and career issues with for students as developed with the Advising team.
- Assists with special projects as needed.
Job Requirements:MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in counseling, student services, adult basic education, ESOL studies or a related discipline.
- Three years of experience working with Adult Learners with demonstrated ability to relate to the needs and interests of adult students enrolled in ABE, ESOL, or HiSET/GED courses.
- Demonstrated experience with multicultural students.
- Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to collaborate.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with Cape Cod social service agencies.
- Demonstrated experience using information technology including entering and manipulating information in a database format, and proficiency with Zoom, Moodle, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Demonstrated experience using evidence based best practices associated with online learning pedagogy (e.g., frequent communication, active learning practices) as well as developing and using multimedia (audio, video, podcasts, online textbooks, etc.) to enhance remote and/or face to face student engagement in active and collaborative workforce exploration activities that support student success.
- Valid driver's license and access to a vehicle.

Additional Information:COMPENSATION: $28.50 per hour for 7 hours per week, plus 2 hours per month for ESOL staff meetings, 2 hours per month for Advisor Staff meetings, and 12 hours per year of professional development. Approximate period of employment: August 2022 - June 2023. Part-time, Non-benefited, Grant-funded MCCC Unit Position.
