Description for Internal Candidates
The Assistant Director of Clinical Services at the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) plays a vital role in providing strategic clinical and administrative vision and leadership regarding the provision of Counseling, Outreach, and Liaison services on campus. CAPS provides clinical and campus-based services to help students achieve their educational and personal goals. We support the holistic well-being of Ithaca College students and strive to promote a healthy and inclusive community through collaboration with campus partners. The Assistant Director of Clinical Services is co-responsible for providing strategic, clinical, fiscal, and administrative vision and leadership regarding the provision of Counseling services on campus.
Examples of duties:
- Provide leadership and serve as a university leader for the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)
- Oversee the provision of clinical services including crisis intervention, assessment, individual, and group counseling. Develop the clinical operation plan each semester.
- Monitor mental health needs of students and adjust CAPS services to match current trends, center resources, and student needs.
- Serve as a secondary point of contact for clinical consultation needs, particularly as they relate to risk management, professional ethics, and mental health law. Serves on the Ithaca College CERT team as back-up to Director.
- Oversee front office policies/procedures and scheduling of clinical tasks. Schedules meetings with, and supervise, administrative staff.
- Co-Develop and update CAPS policies and procedures to assist in efficient and effective operations as well as improve Center consistency.
- Clinically supervise unlicensed staff or trainees as needed.
- Function as the in-house director of the department in support or absence of the Director. Point person for emergencies in absence of Director
- Serve on the CAPS Leadership Team, which meets weekly to determine course of action in matters that impact the entire department.
- Supervise the provision of program evaluation and student experience data for CAPS clinical services
- Provide coordination and support in tasks associated with meeting and maintaining center and institutional accreditations including International Accreditation of Counseling Services (IACS).
- Work closely with the CAPS Director to plan and oversee management of the Budget.

Job duties include but are not limited to the following:
Clinical Services Responsibilities
- Provide clinical services to students including: individual counseling, group counseling, crisis counseling and intervention, family therapy and coordination of care and referrals as needed. Client caseload reduced per administrative duties.
- Monitor implementation of after-hours services (i.e. Protocall). Collate data generated from monthly call logs.
- Refer students as needed for psychiatric consultation; refer to specialists as needed. Oversee administrative management of referral database.
Administrative and Leadership Responsibilities
- Provide individual clinical supervision to graduate counseling and/or social work interns. Review and sign off on all documentation by assigned counseling and/or social work interns in client charts.
- Co-coordinate group counseling program
- Assume operational and clinical problem-solving responsibilities of Director of Student Counseling in director’s absence. CERT team membership. NYS 9.45 training a plus.
Campus Community Responsibilities
- Provide clinical consultations concerning students to faculty and staff as appropriate.
- Serve as a member of committees, advisory groups, and the student life staff, and collaborate on programs, community building and issues related to diversity, mental health, and other relevant topics as assigned or requested.
- Cultivate collaborative relationships with students, faculty, staff to work together on mental health promotion efforts whenever possible.
Outreach Responsibilities
- Provide outreach programming on issues related to mental health and individual development.
- Train faculty, staff, and students on mental health issues (i.e., depression, suicide prevention, anxiety, crisis support, conflict resolution, grief, and sexual misconduct).
- Develop and implement workshops to assist students, faculty, and staff in matters related to mental health.
Job Requirements:
- Master’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling or related field required. Doctorate in Counseling or Clinical psychology preferred.
- Current NY licensure as a Psychologist or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).
- Administrative Supervision experience preferred
- Minimum of five years of experience in counseling. Experience in a college/university setting or in late adolescent/young adult development, intervention, and wellness. Experience in working with diverse populations.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook valued.
- Excellent communication skills and the demonstrated ability to handle confidential information required.
- Must possess the ability to work independently, under deadline pressure and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Responsibilities will include occasional evenings and weekends for crisis response and selected Outreach activities.
