Basic Functions:
Provide programmatic support, advising, and immigration information to international students over the arc of their Denison experience. Assist with international student orientation, provide direct support to individual students as they transition to and matriculate through their college experience, and develop and communicate critical information to the international student population in support of their persistence and success.
Essential Job Functions:
Advising, Visa Document Preparation, & Reporting
- Advise, coach, and educate international students and academic and functional units on U.S. immigration rules and related institutional policies.
- Provide direct, comprehensive advising to international students in regard to complex issues not only related to immigration but also related to academic, logistical, financial, health, travel, and career development issues.
- Assist students in adjusting to life at Denison and in the U.S. including guidance on campus academic and personal support resources, clubs, and organizations on campus, on and off campus employment, applications for Social Security Numbers, state driver's licenses, etc.
- Research, interpret, and apply federal and institutional rules and policies to the specific situations of international students in F-1 or J-1 nonimmigrant status.
- Process student requests such as I-20 Reprints, Travel Signatures, Reduced Course Load (RCL), Program Extensions, SEVIS Transfers, work authorizations such as Curricular Practical Training (CPT), Optional Practical Training (OPT), and STEM OPT Extensions
- Assist international students in preparing for curricular and post-graduate professional development opportunities, e.g. OPT, CPT, and STEM OPT Extensions
- Assist in processing I-20 applications for F-1 students
- Serve as official liaison to federal government agencies as a Designated School Official (DSO) ensuring compliance with immigration regulations.
- Authorize immigration benefits for international students in the SEVIS federal database via Terra Dotta.
- Keep abreast of University, NAFSA, USCIS, DHS, SEVP, and DOS guidance to ensure immigration compliance
- Monitor, report, and submit required information and documentation to federal governmental agencies via SEVIS and Terra Dotta.
Provide direct support to international students.
- Assist with international student orientation planning and serve as mentor for student leaders (Global Ambassadors, June Orientation Leaders, and student office interns).
- Provide coaching and mentoring to students experiencing difficulty with personal and cultural adjustment.
- Provide support and periodically serves as a Care Advisor for students involved in bias-related incidents, interpersonal conflict, and academic or behavioral misconduct.
- Assist students with identifying campus resources related to their academic, personal, or financial wellbeing.
- Provide information regarding travel, safety practices, scams, etc.
- Assist students in adjusting to life at Denison and in the U.S. including guidance on campus academic and personal support resources, clubs, and organizations on campus, on and off campus employment, applications for Social Security Numbers, state driver's licenses, etc.
- Ability to communicate and coordinate with other campus offices to support international students in crisis situations (academic, mental/physical health)
Support programmatic initiatives in support of the international student community and the internationalization of the campus.
- Assist in the design, implementation and assessment of campus events and activities that contribute to the cultivation of global political awareness and cross-cultural understanding.
- Collaborate with other campus units, including but not limited to the Wellness Center; the Center for Belonging and Inclusion; Community Leadership and Involvement Center; Knowlton Center for Career Exploration; and the Academic Resource Center in creating and implementing programs, events, workshops, day trips, etc. that will enhance the international student experience related to academics, career building, social integration, cultural adjustment, etc.
- Act as a liaison for international students with the Student Accounts Office, Office of the Registrar, Office of Human Resources, Financial Aid and other units on campus as needed.

- US citizenship or legal permanent residency required to serve as a DSO
- Must be available to work occasional evenings and weekends to accommodate special events.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree
- Three (3) years of experience providing immigration advising to F and J visa holders in a higher education setting as a Designated School Official (DSO)
- Strong computer skills with proficiency in SEVIS, Terra Dotta, Windows/PC and Mac-based environment, and Google Suite
- US citizenship or legal permanent residency required to serve as a DSO
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in international education administration, student affairs, educational leadership, or related area of study.
- Previous experience working with international college and university students. Experience in a liberal arts institution or other highly student-centered environment.
- Fluency in a foreign language, preferably Mandarin Chinese, Vietnamese, or other Asian language relevant to Denison's international student population.
