Summary of Duties:Under direction and supervision of the Access Center Associate Director, the
American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter provides interpreting services for undergraduate and graduate D/deaf and hard-of-hearing students using ASL and/or other manual sign system in: lectures, labs, academic meetings/clubs, and other university related situations (to include evening and weekend work). Communicate with students and faculty, and secure preparation materials for interpreters and coordinate training opportunities for interpreters. Attend Access Center staff meetings once a semester. Communicate with other ASL interpreters in support of team goals and the provision of services on a daily basis. Advise students when possible.
Required Qualifications:- A Bachelor's degree, preferably in an education-related field, and three (3) years of experience related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. A Masters degree in a relevant field may be substituted for up to one year of the required experience.
- Three (3) years of professional experience interpreting, with at least one year experience in a relevant setting (education or industry).
- Completion of an accredited interpreter training program or equivalent.
- Ability to have or obtain by the time of hire, a state or national certification or equivalent.
- Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and Signed English (PSE).
Preferred Qualifications:- State or national ASL certification.
- Advanced degree, preferably in business or biological science.
- More than five (5) years classroom experience as a sign language interpreter in a post-secondary educational setting
- More than three (3) years of classroom experience as a sign language interpreter in advanced business courses.
