Queensborough Community College invites applications from individuals interested in assuming a leadership position as College Discovery Director. College Discovery (CD) is a higher education opportunity program established to provide academic and counseling support for eligible students at the City University of New York (CUNY) Community Colleges.
Queensborough Community College is one of 24 institutions, including seven community colleges, within The City University of New York (CUNY), the nation???s largest urban public university. The College, established in 1958, confers the Associate in Arts, the Associate in Science and the Associate in Applied Science degrees, and offers Certificate Programs in various career areas. It offers over 40 programs in Liberal Arts & Sciences, Business, Engineering Technologies, Arts & Humanities, Health Related Sciences, and Education and has an enrollment of over 12,000 students.

The TRHT Campus Center initiative is a nation-wide effort to provide a platform for facilitated dialogues that challenge limiting narratives about race and strengthen understanding of our shared humanity.
The CD Director will be part of a dynamic team within the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. They will oversee the programs operations; designs, implements, and monitors a comprehensive program of academic and counseling services for College Discovery's target student population ranging between 200 and 300 students per year;develops and implements academic interventions and other new initiatives to improve students' academic performance; and administers intensive academic support assessments and interventions for probation and at-risk students. The Director will also manage the program budget; writes grant proposals and acquires funding to support the development of new offerings and services; conducts ongoing assessment of the main program functions to improve upon service delivery; and manage a staff that consists of 3 advisors, 1 instructional staff, and support staff.
A key goal of the college is to provide an academic environment that strengthens our students??? commitment to their own education, thus making it possible for them to graduate and complete their academic or professional goals in a timely manner. The College Discovery (CD) Program is a NYS Opportunity Program which has been providing counseling, comprehensive academic, and financial support to selected students for well-over 50 years. The CD program at QCC also offers mandatory freshmen enrichment classes which help students with adjusting to college life, the work environment, financial independence and management, as well as general life-coping skills. Many of our graduates attend senior colleges in the CUNY, SUNY or private college in NY State where they continue to receive similar opportunity program services.

Reporting to the Dean of Enrollment Management, the successful candidate will be responsible for general oversight of the College Discovery Program. The Director develops and implements strategies to improve recruitment and retention of College Discovery Students in collaboration with the counselors, prepares annual evaluations, conducts monthly program meetings, attends monthly meetings at the Office of Special Programs/ CUNY central, and represents the program at a number of campus-based meetings including the Enrollment Management Operations and Advisement Council.
In addition to the CUNY Title Overview, the Director's responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Overseeing the day-to-day operations of the College Discovery program, plans the offerings for the program???s mandatory annual ???summer experience??? for newly admitted first-time students
- Developing and monitoring a comprehensive program of academic (tutoring), counseling and financial aid services for a specific student population
- Implementing academic interventions and other new initiatives to improve students' academic performance and retention
- Evaluating intensive academic support assessments and interventions for probation and at-risk students; makes recommendations to improve offerings
- Overseeing program's budget and daily administration, including scheduling and timely delivery of services
- Preparing reports for management; may write grant proposals to support the development of new offerings and services
- Supervise and train program staff
- Evening and weekend hours as needed
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's Degree and eight years' relevant experience required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will possess the following:
- Experience working within an opportunity program or special program at a college or university
- Demonstrated management and supervisory skills as well as budget oversight and planning experience
- Strong understanding of the needs and challenges facing students from diverse urban backgrounds
- Experience designing, implementing and monitoring a comprehensive program of academic, counseling and tutoring student support services
- Experience developing and implementing interventions to improve academic performance for at-risk students
- Must be an innovative thinker with a focus on strategy and the ability to smoothly implement new initiatives
- A demonstrated record and evidence of success in leading a team
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, within the department and with faculty and other administrators and demonstration of a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Experience using an integrated student information system (PeopleSoft/CUNYFirst), degree audit system (Degree Works), CRM tool (Hobsons Connect), Blackboard and Starfish preferred
Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen.
