The Blum Center for Developing Economies leverages the talent, enthusiasm, and energy of the University of California, Berkeley community to address problems in low-resource areas. Our interdisciplinary problem-solving approach draws on students and faculty dedicated to facing this challenge through innovative initiatives, education, and research. The Blum Center houses an undergraduate minor in Global Poverty & Practice program, one of the most popular minors on the Berkeley campus; a graduate PhD minor in Development Engineering, the first in the nation; the Big Ideas Contest, the University of California's premier social entrepreneurship catalyst serving thousands of students across 10 campuses; and a Master of Development Engineering, UC Berkeley's first professional degree committed to solving complex global challenges across the corporate, nonprofit, and government sectors.
The Blum Center for Developing Economies is a multidisciplinary research and education unit reporting to OVCR. It's undergraduate minor, Global Poverty & Practice, is a well regarded and popular program on campus, with a steady state of about 300 students from over 40 majors. It's graduate minor (a Designated Emphasis) in Development Engineering is the first in the nation, attracting students from over 15 disciplines. Recently, the Graduate Group in Development Engineering proposed a Master of Development Engineering (MDevEng) Self-Supporting Graduate Professional Degree Program (SSGPDP), to be managed administratively by the Blum Center. This is a new interdisciplinary field to address the challenges posed by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The field integrates engineering, economics, business, natural resource development, and social sciences to develop, implement, and evaluate new technological interventions that address the needs of low-income communities around the world.

Responsibilities

- Applying professional student services concepts, provides the full range of student services to student population served by the organization.
- Support program management for the Development Engineering Designated Emphasis (Including InFEWS and DToD concentrations), M.DevEng, and GPP Minor, including day to day activities and events throughout the duration of the academic year. Provide strategic support and thought leadership to improve infrastructure, systems and processes for all programs.

- Academic Advising: Advises faculty on departmental / school / college and university policies and procedures; reviews students' progress and advises students and faculty on requirements for degree / program completion; identifies students with progression problems and recommends interventions; devises curriculum planning in collaboration with chair / dean and faculty, and with other departments.
- Serves as the Graduate Student Advisor to make sure DevEng students are on track and understand what is required in the program. Keeps track of students in the program and get regular updates about student progress. Provides advising to GPP Minor students on academic progress, program requirements, and identification of suitable volunteer and internship experiences.

- Recruitment and Admissions: Plans and implements outreach programs with specifically targeted institutions; advises prospective applicants on necessary academic preparation; appropriateness of program as it pertains to the prospective applicant's goals; utilizing in-depth knowledge of the organization's admissions criteria, helps rank applicants for admissions; evaluates domestic and international transcripts for degree eligibility; initiates and arranges student recruitment visits.
- Prospective students' advising - be the first point of contact for students interested in joining the program. Answer questions through virtual and in- person office hours, through email communication, and recruit students in relevant on campus and off campus events.
