Position SummaryThe Fowler College of Business (FCB) consists of one school and four academic departments (Charles W. Lamden School of Accountancy, Finance, Management Information Systems, Management, and Marketing), a Dean, a Senior Associate Dean for External Relations and Programs, an Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, an Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, a Director for Resource Management, a Director for Graduate Programs, a Director for Undergraduate Programs, a Director for Assessment, a Director for the Graduate Career Management Center, and a Managing Director for the Center for Advancing Global Business.
The Center for Student Success within the College provides all academic and informational advising for prospective and current students in the Undergraduate Program. It also focuses on students experiencing academic difficulty and those participating in special programs. It provides assistance to students in filling out academic forms and petitions, and in understanding university and college policies, requirements, and procedures. The unit is responsible for implementing all policies, procedures, and decisions made regarding currently attending Business majors. The unit coordinates the following: primary commencement function (undergraduate for approximately 1,200 students/8,000 guests); undergraduate academic advising, tutoring, study abroad, incoming freshman and transfer student orientation among others.
The Academic Advisor serves as a staff member in the Fowler College of Business assigned to the Center for Student Success. Under general supervision, the Academic Advisor provides individual and group information and advising for a student population of approximately 5,000 undergraduates in Business Administration and participates as a team member in the development of Center for Student Success policies and procedures.
The Academic Advisor will be responsible for the academic advising of an assigned caseload of prospective and current students within the Fowler College of Business. Under the general supervision of the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and the Lead Advisor, the Academic Advisor will advise students through individual appointments, group advising sessions, over the telephone and email. The Academic Advisor will counsel academically at-risk students and those not making progress towards degree to identify possible solutions and make referrals to appropriate College and campus resources.
The Academic Advisor is an integral part of the Center for Student Success team and will provide staffing support at related events and assist other staff members as needed for successful maintenance of unit goals. Some evening and weekend hours will be required.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position anticipated to end on or before June 30, 2023, with the possibility of reappointment. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with occasional evenings and weekends, but may vary based on operational needs. The individual hired into this role will work on-campus at SDSU in San Diego.
Education and ExperienceEducation: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the required knowledge and abilities may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Experience: Possession of the required knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A Master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
Specialized Skills - Ability to interact effectively with students, parents, faculty, and staff and to work as a member of a team.
- Experience using MS Office Suite and familiarity with web based applications.
- Flexibility, and attention to detail are required.
Preferred Qualifications - Three years of experience working in a college or university's admissions, advising, evaluations, registrar, or other student service-related office
- Experience presenting to diverse audiences of varying size
- Experience explaining and interpreting academic policies governing a public or private university via phone, email, or in person
- Excellent customer service skills
- Strong computer and database management skills; demonstrated ability to work in a team-oriented environment
- Initiative and creativity are required for situations involving changing guidelines and regulations or when existing procedures and guidelines must be applied to unusual circumstances
- Ability to carry out day-to-day assignments without immediate direction
Compensation and BenefitsStarting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $4,304 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,304 - $6,120 per month.

An individual is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose of a two-shot vaccine or two weeks after the first dose of a single-shot vaccine.
