Detailed Description:The Career Counselor serves as a liaison between the Career Development Center and the College of Arts & Sciences. The Career Counselor is responsible for assisting in developing, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive career development program to meet the career development needs of students and alumni from the College of Arts and Sciences. The position provides career counseling to students and alumni in the social sciences, arts, humanities, and science disciplines in the areas of self assessment, career exploration, decision-making, internship and job search preparation, and graduate and professional school planning. The Career Counselor develops and implements workshops, career events, and networking opportunities for students in the College. Coordinates and assists with office wide job fairs, workshops and other events. Supervision Received from Works under the general supervision of the appropriate Assistant Director with consultation from the Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
Duties & Responsibilities:Career Counseling:
- Provides individual career counseling (appointments and office hours advising) for College of Arts and Sciences students and alumni. Counsels students on decisions regarding relationship of major to career choice and/or graduate school, researching occupational information, and conducting informational interviews. Teaches students how to develop an individualized job search plan, prepare resume and cover letter, and participate effectively in a variety of interview settings. Critiques students' written materials including resumes, cover letters, and personal statements and offers direct, personalized feedback. Conducts individual mock interviews and offers verbal feedback to improve student effectiveness in securing employment or graduate school acceptance.
College of Arts and Sciences Career Development Initiatives and Support Strategic Planning:
- Assist in the implementation and oversight of the College of Arts and Sciences Professional Development Compass program. Program Development.
- Coordinates classroom presentations and workshops to meet the career development needs of students within the College of Arts and Sciences.
- Assists with Torero Treks, Resume Books, and department and industry specific events. Relationship Building and Liaison Roles.
- Collaborates with and builds strong partnerships with the College of Arts and Science faculty and student organizations in order to create and implement department and industry programs.
- Serves as the liaison to department Internship Coordinators, facilitating yearly meetings.
- Partners with the Employer Relations staff to develop and maintain relationships with employers, parents, graduate schools and alumni from various sectors and industries to increase internship, job and graduate school opportunities for students and alumni from the College of Arts and Sciences.
Professional Development:
- Sets and meets professional objectives that enhance the Career Development Center and maintains the professional reputation of the department and the university. Serves as liaison to professional associations to stay abreast of current developments in career counseling and employment trends (Mountain Pacific Association of Colleges and Employer, National Association of Colleges and Employers).
Job Requirements:Minimum Qualifications: - Masters degree in related area (ex: Counseling, Higher Education, Student Affairs) One year of experience providing career counseling in a university setting.
- Working knowledge and awareness of college student development theories, career development theories, and/or counseling theories.
- Ability to provide responsive and confidential career counseling to diverse clients.
- Ability to develop and facilitate group presentations and workshops.
- Demonstrated ability to partner with student organizations, faculty and campus departments.
- Strong time management skills and the ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities.
- Demonstrated proficiency in program management.
- Ability to work collaboratively on team projects with diverse individuals.
- Flexibility and willingness to work early mornings, evenings and weekends as needed
