ABOUT THE POSITION
The Director of Student Financial Services, reporting through the division of Student Affairs, provides leadership and direct supervision for the Payments and Billing department and staff, supports and consults on student account transactions in Student Services (an integrated one-stop service center), and participates as a member of the Student Affairs leadership team.
The Director of Student Financial Services oversees staff processes such as payment plans, third-party and PSEO awards and billing, overall Payments and Billing customer service, payment plans, processing of Return of Title IV funds, completion of the work-study timesheets biweekly, paying student workers, reconciling cash sessions, check printing and preparing bank deposits.
The Director of Student Financial Services is responsible for collaborating with others on campus, monitoring financial aid disbursements, processing federal drawdowns, approving finance system rights, approving accounts receivable adjustments, waiving employee tuition, processing student refunds and completing any correcting transactions for the monthly local bank reconciliation. This position is directly responsible for managing the operations, programs, budget management and staff and ensuring compliance with all MinnState, federal and state regulations.

The Director of Student Financial Services plays a significant role in achieving these three goals by supporting and helping our students understand their student accounts.
QUALIFICATIONS
Essential
• Bachelor’s degree
• Two years of experience with staff management and supervision or providing work direction to professional, para-professional or student employees
• Proven experience providing culturally responsive services to address the wide-ranging needs of students of color, first-generation students, and low-income students
• Strong knowledge and understanding of business administration practices, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), governmental accounting, and federal regulations
• Experience with databases, spreadsheets and word processing
• Excellent communication and customer service skills
• Ability to gather and analyze data and prepare reports both routinely and upon request
• Ability to explain policies, procedures and data to those unfamiliar with so that they can understand it
• Demonstrated ability to write policies and procedures that are in compliance and alignment with state and agency rules and regulations
• Demonstrated ability to create training materials and conduct training that is comprehensive and understandable
Preferred
• Supervisory experience in a union environment
• Knowledge of Minnesota State policies, procedures and practices as they relate to accounts receivable and financial management
• Working knowledge and experience using MnSCU’s ISRS system
• Knowledge of project management and process improvement techniques
• Ability to create documents in Microsoft Visio
• Proven experience assessing student needs, in particular to address racial disparities or move toward the goals outlined in Equity 2025
• Proven experience with student information systems and data management
• Experience working with data to analyze racial disparities
• Working proficiency in Somali, Hmong, Arabic, or Spanish
