This position will support the activities of the Math Center for Educational Programs (MathCEP), with a particular emphasis on interacting with potential, current, and former students in our programs. These outward-facing duties include: communication with school districts and families to recruit students for the University of Minnesota Talented Youth Mathematics Programs (UMTYMP) and other enrichment programs; coordinating the registration process for UMTYMP students, including the qualifying exams each spring; coordinating various public events; maintaining a database of UMTYMP alumni and coordinating alumni surveys; providing administrative support to MathCEP faculty writing letters of recommendation for current and former students; and serving as a liaison between MathCEP faculty and K-12 math teachers throughout the state who wish to use materials developed by our center.
Major Job Functions
Recruitment. This position will be responsible for developing and maintaining contacts within schools and districts throughout the state, with particular emphasis on the Twin Cities metro area, to disseminate information about MathCEP’s programs. Examples include providing information about UMTYMP to teachers and math program managers in school districts, or giving flyers about our enrichment programs to schools to be sent home with students. (25%)
Coordinate Testing and Registration for UMTYMP. Every spring, approximately 700 students register for our UMTYMP qualification process, which includes an exam taken on campus. This position will be responsible for organizing and implementing this entire admissions process, with the help and support of other MathCEP staff and faculty. (20%)
Alumni Relations. UMTYMP has thousands of alumni, but after they graduate from the program their contact information changes frequently, as they move from high school to college and eventually other careers. This position will be responsible for updating our previous alumni records, where possible, and developing a new alumni relations program, including alumni surveys and engagement. (20%)
Communications. Collaborate with other center staff and faculty on newsletters, flyers, and email communications. (10%)
Public Events. Organize and implement various public events, including an UMTYMP recognition ceremony for students who have finished the program, a “Meet your Teacher” event at the beginning of the year, and any other events as determined by program needs. These duties include communication with students and families, coordination of staff and catering, and interaction with participants. (5%)
Other. Assisting with Center administrative processes and communications as assigned. (20%)
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or combination of related education and work experience to equal four years.
All MathCEP employees work with minors and must pass an appropriate background check.
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated experience with skills related to the position
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple project and priorities
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Demonstrated experience with customer service and conflict management
Documented experience with project management
Proficiency with standard office software (e.g. Microsoft Office and Google Apps)
Experience developing and implementing new administrative processes
Demonstrated ability and flexibility in collaborating with others
Experience in education, mathematics, or other fields related to MathCEP’s mission
Experience working with youth.
