Job Description:
- Advises undergraduates interested in pursuing research, with a particular focus on STEM students.
- Organizes and facilitates events and workshops for students to increase a) their awareness of undergraduate research opportunities on/off campus, b) provide guidance on IRB, health and safety training, research ethics, and other best practices; c) discipline-specific training (tools, systems, data collection); and to improve d) their research, communication, and presentation skills. Works with undergraduates to develop and revise submissions to the relevant Institutional Review Board.
- Partners with faculty, departments, and other campus partners in the STEM divisions to help develop new undergraduate research opportunities, programs, and other relevant initiatives.
- Liaise with STEM faculty and departments to promote and recruit for existing research opportunities and aids in the development of new opportunities as needed.
- Assists in implementation of effective procedures and tools to manage research programs and initiatives.
- Assists in the development and support of research opportunities focused on engagement and retention of underrepresented populations in STEM.
- Coordinates across campus to ensure that the CCRF undergraduate research initiatives effectively support the College and University's mission.
- Maintains a professional identity and highly visible presence for the CCRF undergraduate research enterprise and actively promotes undergraduate research among faculty, staff, and students.
- Along with the CCRF research team, actively participates as a representative of the University of Chicago in professional development opportunities sponsored by the Council of Undergraduate Research (CUR), among others.
- Organizes and facilitates professional development opportunities for faculty, related to enhancing undergraduate research and mentorship, coordinates student and faculty participation in local, regional, and national conferences and other presentations of undergraduate research and creative scholarship.
- Implements effective assessment and reporting processes for undergraduate research engagement across campus, with a particular focus on engagement in STEM research.
- Solves problems in areas such as academic and administrative policy, student admissions, curriculum research and development, and budget development. Advises various campus-wide and program committees in various aspects of student life.
- Collaborates with academic divisions in educating students on safety issues. Interprets student disciplinary issues and prepares an annual university summary of disciplinary actions. Counsels students, parents, and staff in response to concerns, and handles complex situations including student crises.
- Performs other related work as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
Education:
- PhD or terminal degree in discipline; STEM fields.
Experience:
- Prior full-time experience in undergraduate research.
- Prior experience in research mentoring, developmental advising, and instruction.
- Progressively responsible administrative experience.
- Background organizing events, facilitating, and leading workshops and information sessions.
- Working knowledge developing undergraduate research best practices and policies.
- Formal teaching experience.
Technical Skills or Knowledge:
- Proficiency in Mac and PC environments.
- Proficiency in Word, Excel, Outlook, and online organizational tools.
- Familiarity with Adobe graphic design/web development environments, database management, social media platforms.
Preferred Competencies
- Possess an in-depth understanding of undergraduate research in STEM and an established track record of activities related to undergraduate research, high-impact advising, and broadly, teaching and learning practices in higher education.
- Substantive experience working within the broader research enterprise and be able to effectively guide undergraduates in translating their academic interests into viable research experiences.
- Highly motivated, well-organized, detail-oriented, and resourceful individual who enjoys working closely with undergraduates.
- Familiarity with students and educational experience in highly selective, top-tier institutions.
- Demonstrated ability to establish good working relationships with people of different backgrounds.
- Strong commitment to young adults and the values and goals of a liberal arts education; appreciation for the value of undergraduate research as a scholarly enterprise and as important for student development.
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative, provide thought-leadership, and work well as a principle, contributing member to a small team.
- Excellent organizational, administrative, and computer skills.
- Strong event management skills, ability to prioritize and manage concurrent tasks with interruptions, ability to meet deadlines and respond to many emails, in person and phone requests in a timely fashion.
- Demonstrated ability to handle highly confidential information related to students, faculty, and staff.
- Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and manage effectively competing demands.
- Proven ability to collaborate with faculty and staff.
- Strong written and oral presentation skills; teaching experience.
