THE DEPARTMENT:
Student Health and Wellness Services (SHWS) is one component within the Division of Student Affairs.
The mission of Student Health and Wellness Services is to promote students' healthy lifestyles and academic success by providing quality medical, psychological, and wellness services. The department provides ambulatory health care, health education programs, prevention, and healing services to students of Cal Poly Pomona.
Here’s what you can expect on a typical day as a Registered Nurse:
- Establish priorities and respond efficiently and calmly in emergency situations.
- Analyze the clinic schedule to meet patient needs and make decisions that contribute to efficient clinic operations and patient flow. Acting as a resource for clinical staff, exercises independent judgment and discretion regarding daily operations, procedures, and utilization of resources.
- Provide quality, student-centered patient care in accordance with Student Health Services policies and procedures.
- Possess nursing skills and knowledge to triage all patients and identify those who require immediate medical intervention.
- Coordinate with providers when additional resources such as emergency services, crisis counselors, Survivor Advocate, or Campus Police are needed. Provides nursing assessment, observation, and intervention in any patient care area of Student Health Services.
- Maintain an inventory of medical and surgical supplies for the assigned station; stocking of supplies, equipment, and medication required to carry out clinician orders.
- Daily cleaning and stocking of supplies in examination rooms and nurses’ stations.
- Document the nursing assessment, appropriate vital signs and evaluates the need for laboratory tests and/or x-rays prior to clinician examination.
- Prepare the patient and assists the clinician with examination and procedures.
- Carry out clinician’s orders for diagnostic tests, procedures, and administration of medications. Administer allergy injections.
- Start and maintain IV lines and fluids for acutely ill students. Documents all nursing interventions in the medical record.
- Provides all immunizations offered by Student Health Services.
- Act as a liaison between other nursing staff, medical records, providers, and front desk staff to ensure patient rights of privacy, safety, and confidentiality.
- Assist in the development and implementation of nursing services, policies, and procedures.
- May assign tasks to and review the work of clinic support staff within their scope of practice; performs lead duties for the nursing staff in the absence of the RN III and other duties as assigned.
- Participate in Nursing Quality Management and Improvement Program.
- Serve on Student Health Services Committees as designated by the Director.
- Participate in disaster planning and drills.
- Assist in providing services to the campus community for any functions associated with Student Health Services.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Completion of a professional nursing program in an approved school of nursing or by additional preparation as approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing
- State of California license as a Registered Nurse and BLS Certification.
- One year of professional nursing experience which has provided evidence of the ability to work independently in specialized nursing activities and to support the overall nursing program within the Student Health Center; or equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.
- Within the scope of practice of a Registered Nurse as mandated by the State of California Board of Nursing: able to assess patient's illness or injury; document assessment and interventions in the medical Record
- Carry out clinician's orders for treatment, procedures, medication and observation.
- Thorough knowledge of nursing care principles and practices pertaining to the scope of practice: anatomy and physiology applicable to assigned duties; basic medications and their effects, as well as potential complications; application and proper use of various medical supplies and equipment used in performing assigned nursing duties; and aseptic techniques and requirements.
- Working knowledge of California laws and regulations pertaining to RNs and their scope of practice.
- Ability to work calmly in a stressful situation.
- Ability to communicate with a variety of people (students, health care providers, faculty, staff, administrators, community members) in an effective, clear, sensitive and timely manner.
- Ability to work in a dynamic environment, and demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in meeting student healthcare and operational needs.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
- 3 - 5 years of nursing experience in college health, ambulatory care or acute care hospital.
- Ability to perform assigned nursing duties and demonstrate appropriate nursing practices; demonstrate proper techniques.

- Learn related clinic procedures and handle equipment required for patient care in a Student Health Center
- Understand basic medical terminology
- Make accurate observations and accurately document a patient’s subjective complaint in medical records
- Exercise correct judgment within the areas of assigned responsibility; follow detailed oral and written instructions
- Use applicable health center automated systems as needed to perform duties
- Maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff
- Maintain patient confidentiality in compliance with applicable federal and state laws and regulations
- Be sensitive to and communicate effectively with patients from diverse backgrounds
