DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The Division of Undergraduate Education's Office of Campus Advising Coordination works to support undergraduate success, retention and graduation, and to create an environment in which academic advising can take place effectively across the UC Santa Cruz campus. The office collaborates with advisors in colleges, departments, divisions, and student service units, and with campus infrastructure, to improve policies, procedures, and tools; to support programs and innovations aimed at student success; and to provide training and development opportunities for undergraduate advisors.
JOB SUMMARY
The Strategic Initiatives and Assessment Coordinator serves both as the lead for the strategic advising initiatives team in the Office of Campus Advising Coordination, and as the lead assessment expert for academic advising on the UCSC campus. Using skills as a seasoned, experienced professional, the incumbent will analyze large student academic datasets to identify barriers to graduation, and will develop strategies through which academic advising can support improved undergraduate retention and graduation. The Advising Strategic Initiatives and Assessment Coordinator will supervise a team of two Retention and Graduation Specialists, whose job functions will include proactive outreach and the development and implementation of student programming to support student success and timely graduation.

JOB DUTIES 25% - Develop reports and perform analyses of student data to identify common barriers to undergraduate success and timely graduation.
20% - Utilizing knowledge of successful success and retention programs in higher education, develop outreach strategies and programming.
15% - Supervise a team of retention and graduation specialists.
15% - Develop and implement assessment strategies for academic advising, supporting a culture of continuous improvement. Lead the assessment subcommittee of the Undergraduate Academic Advising Council.
10% - Develop training and other materials to support the assessment of advising effectiveness in advising offices across the UC Santa Cruz campus.
10% - Provide support and coordination for data-driven outreach efforts within academic advising offices at UC Santa Cruz.
5% - As a member of the Office of Campus Advising Coordination in the Division of Undergraduate Education, collaborate to support the development and implementation of additional projects focused on undergraduate engagement, success, retention, and graduation. This may include the supervision of student staff.
QUALIFICATIONS Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Demonstrated knowledge of effective retention initiatives related to academic advising within higher education.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with tact and diplomacy
Experience working in an advising or student success capacity in an institution of higher education, with experience analyzing student records and knowledge of academic policies.
Project management skills, with the ability to independently set priorities, and complete assignments with attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy.
Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with students, faculty, staff, and parents of diverse social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds, and an understanding of the challenges faced by diverse student populations (including but not limited to first generation students, underrepresented students, students with disabilities, low-income students, LGBT students, non-traditional students, veterans) in higher education.
Skills in analyzing, researching and synthesizing large amounts of data for preparing sound and relevant proposals / analyses.
Knowledge of university-specific computer application programs, with the ability to quickly learn and utilize new technology tools.
Skills in staff supervision, including the ability to supervise a remote, hybrid, or in-person team.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in related area and/ or equivalent experience / training.
