The Santos Manuel Student Union (SMSU), through its programs and facilities, is a focal point of the campus where students, faculty, staff, administration, alumni, and guests develop an enduring connection to the university. As a campus social hub, the SMSU assists in the retention and development of students, while encouraging a deeper understanding and appreciation of cultural pluralism, gender equity, and ethnic diversity. We accomplish this by providing a variety of cultural, social, educational, and recreational activities, which create an environment conducive to personal growth and development. Planned activities also provide students with leadership opportunities and employment, which promotes an active learning experience as well as relaxation, entertainment, and social interaction. As the meeting place on campus for students and organizations, the facilities provide a comfortable and relaxing environment that embodies the delivery of services important to the university community. As a bridge between formal learning and life experience, co-curricular activities coordinated by the SMSU serve as a training ground for the development of student leaders.
The SMSU facilities include a spacious lobby, relaxation and study lounge areas, meeting rooms, a state-of-the-art theater, multi-purpose Events Center used for major events, an Automatic Teller Machine, graphics services, and Student Union scheduling. Our newest addition to assisting our students academically is the laptop checkout program. Other services and departments located within the SMSU are the Coyote Cafe, the Blue Coyote Pub, Starbucks, Coyote Express convenience store, the Associated Students, Inc., DREAMers Resource and Success Center, Title IX & Gender Equity, Orientation, and First-Year Experience, and the Office of Student Engagement.
Full-Time, exempt position.
This is a regular, full-time, hourly position. Willingness to work a flexible schedule as necessary to respond to emergency/urgent situations is required. This may include working extended hours, evenings, weekends, and some holidays.
Under the direction of the Santos Manuel Student Union Executive Director, the Santos Manuel Student Union Marketing Manager is responsible for providing technical and administrative oversight for the planning, promotion, and execution of all advertising efforts, brand management, public relations, and external communications of the SMSU. Supervises Creative Specialist and Communication and Media Specialist contracts, work orders, and billing for internal and external clients. The Marketing Manager is an integral member of a hard-working team comprised of full-time and part-time staff within the Santos Manuel Student Union. The Marketing Manager must be able to demonstrate the ability to work effectively with a diverse population of program members, guests, and staff.
Typical activities include but are not limited to:
Works with SMSU and RW units to support their promotional needs and ensures that marketing strategies and objectives effectively reach their intended target audiences.
Oversee the learning and professional development of student assistants within the Marketing Department. . Provides a developmental work environment, with appropriately differentiated supervisory and task levels for Specialists, Graphic Design Student Assistants and Interns, Social Media Student Assistants, and Videography/Photography Student Assistants.
Build and maintain the branding, voice, and image of the SMSU and RW. This includes creating, maintaining, implementing, and assessment of a Branding toolkit for the Santos Manuel Student Union departments and Recreation and Wellness department
Coordinate with SMSU and RW Operations to ensure maintenance of the SMSU/RW brand and voice within our facilities
Manages the operating budget, prepares annual budget requests and quarterly budget projections. Consults with the Executive Director, to recommend ongoing adjustments and provide fiscal oversight for the Marketing Department.
Assist the development and maintenance of the SMSU Website, Social Media Initiatives, and Digital Signage program.
Works with the SMSU Executive Director to create, implement, maintain and assess the SMSU/RW Marketing/Branding Strategic Plan. This includes creating goals and vision for the department and creating learning/program outcomes to assess and improve.
Conducts regular needs assessments, surveys, and focus groups ascertaining campus views and perceptions of the SMSU and RW to recommend future development of SMSU/RW programs and services.
Makes recommendations relative to needs for production equipment including; hardware, software, and other technology needs for the Marketing Department.
Reviews and collaborates with the Creative Specialist and Communications and Media Specialist in creating administrative and procedural manuals for the Marketing Department. Develops other documents for the SMSU including; marketing plan, handbooks, reports, brochures, and other print and electronic documents as needed.
Prepares monthly marketing reports for the SMSU Board of Directors.
Maintains archives for all projects produced by the Marketing Department.
Coordinates with campus departments such as Division of Student Affairs, Strategic Communication, Academic Technologies and Innovations, Printing Services, and off-campus vendors to facilitate support for SMSU marketing efforts.
Supervises and evaluates the Creative Specialist and Communications and Media Specialist
Develops for-credit student internships in conjunction with appropriate academic departments.
Serves on SMSU and campus-wide committees as directed.
Assist with special projects as assigned. by the Executive Director
Other related duties as assigned by the Executive Director
Customer Service and Collaboration:

Develops and maintains positive working relationships with campus partners, off-campus partners, and other university employees.
Bachelor's degree (B.A.) or equivalent from four-year college or university in marketing, graphic design, public relations, or related field
One or more years of directly related experience; preferably in college union or comparable student services occupation or equivalent combination of education and experience
Demonstrated knowledge of marketing principles.
Experience in budgeting, fiscal management and reporting.
Demonstrated ability to work with an ethnically diverse and culturally pluralistic student population and campus community.
Experience Preferred in Photoshop, Illustrator, Microsoft Office Suite, both PC and MAC computers is preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to operate a personal computer, proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and ability to learn and utilize new software programs
Ability to provide excellent customer service and work well with part-time and full-time staff
Ability to take the initiative for additional projects and be self-motivated to initiate interactions with guests
Ability to meet deadlines, work effectively in a dynamic environment, and prioritize workload
Ability to manage information flow (including internal and external communication)
Ability to initiate collaborative work with diverse students, faculty, and staff.
Ability to pay attention to detail and be accurate
Ability to demonstrate thoroughness, completeness, follow through on presentation and appearance of work
Demonstrated Experience in student program development, budget management, and contract negotiations.
Demonstrated ability to influence the creation, implementation, and management of a balanced array of programs that reflect students' interests and educational needs.
Proven ability to assess program impact on student learning, including the use of quantitative and qualitative data.
