SOURCE, the community engagement and service-learning center for the Johns Hopkins University Schools of Public Health, Nursing, and Medicine, is seeking an Assistant Director. This position supports the growth and effectiveness of community involvement initiatives. The Assistant Director works closely with students and student leaders, and assists them in developing community outreach skills, exploring and understanding social justice issues, accessing community service resources, and making connections to the Baltimore community, particularly as it relates to students' future roles as health professionals.
The Assistant Director is expected to model and encourage involvement in the community and effective program planning. All responsibilities require close collaboration with SOURCE's Director and staff, students and student leaders, student governments, Student Affairs deans, campus colleagues, and community-based organizations.
This role functions as a counselor/educator; providing programs and services that embrace the values of social justice, citizenship, ethical decision-making, diversity and service to others. Specifically, the duties include: counseling, educational program management, event planning, advising, and community partnership coordination.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Provide individual consultation and referrals to students, faculty, and staff interested in service to the community.
Field and respond to information requests from all levels of internal (faculty, staff, students) and external individuals and organizations regarding SOURCE policies, procedures, and services.
Create awareness on campus of different social issues in Baltimore City.
Develop reflection and educational resources for students, student groups, and campus colleagues.
Facilitate reflection for student, faculty, and staff volunteers working with community organizations.
Educational Program Management
Implement educational programs around social justice, social determinants of health, and authentic community partnerships.
Lead the tri-school SOURCE Service Scholars Program, including community partner project proposals and selection; student recruitment, selection, and training; facilitating academy sessions; and advising individual scholars
Manage SOURCE's HIV Counseling and Testing Program, including community partnerships; student recruitment, selection, and training; reflection and troubleshooting.
Coordinate The Identity Clinic in partnership with Living Classrooms Foundation
Coordinate service activities for the School of Medicine TIME: Health Care Disparities course.
Track and report key data pertaining to student group engagement in educational programs.
Supervise 2 Federal Work-Study student program assistants, who support the implementation of SOURCE educational programs.
Liaise with campus colleagues around community engagement programs.
Event & Program Planning
Conduct community tours, seminars, donation drives, Days of Service, National Volunteer Week, SOURCE orientations, and other events.
Coordinate SOURCE Awards process, including nominations and committee review process
Manage compliance with the JHU Child Safety Policy, including registration, training, and tracking of all volunteers and programs from the health professional schools that work with youth under the age of 18 years.
Organize Hopkins Takes Time for Baltimore service events for faculty and staff.
Must be present and accountable during key activities and events sponsored, co-sponsored or offered by SOURCE, including occasional evening and weekend events.
Develop and manage student group policies and procedures in collaboration with Student Affairs Deans and student government associations in the health professional schools.
Serve as a consultant and advisor to community-engaged student groups, encourage and sustain partnerships with student groups, and provide services and support to partnering student groups.
Assist students and student groups in planning service-related programs and events.
Review and approve new student groups and proposed service activities
Develop, coordinate and train student leaders in leading service opportunities in order to prepare student leaders to become ambassadors for SOURCE.
Manage SOURCE Student Governing Board, and subcommittee of the board.
Broaden volunteer recruitment efforts.
Community Partnership Coordination
Develop and sustain viable community partnerships with local public health organizations.
Assist community partners in structuring their identified needs into engagement opportunities for the health professional schools.
Assist in deepening SOURCE's responsiveness to community inquiry, and the level of engagement of local community partners in existing SOURCE programs and service-learning courses.
In addition, the Assistant Director functions as an integral member of SOURCE's team, assisting the Director in managing the general operations of the center, and responding to the needs of the center through contributing to special projects and other duties as assigned.
Two years' related experience required; preferably experience working with college students/student groups and/or planning and promoting service activities.
Past volunteer experience preferred.
Experience working with Microsoft Office Suite required.

Ability to speak knowledgeably of the significance of partnership and the importance of volunteer/service-learner preparation and training.
Degree of Independent Action Performed:
Position requires high-level of coordination and collaborative skills.
Moderate oversight from SOURCE Director.
Internal & External Contacts Required:
Requires extensive coordination with various offices within the JHU Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health (MPH Program, academic departments, Student Affairs), students, student groups, and with external contacts at local non-profit organizations.
