About the Opportunity: The Assistant Director (AD) serves as a member of the Department of Residential Life's leadership team and shares in the management and supervision of the live-in Residential Life staff. They will directly supervise 1-2 full-time Area Coordinators, 2-5 full-time Residence Directors, 1-3 Student Graduate Assistants and indirectly supervise 1-2 additional full-time Residence Directors, , and up to 50-75 Student Resident Assistants.
The AD will assist in the development of departmental policy and decision-making functions for the achievement of departmental goals and objectives. This AD will be charged with coordination and implementation of departmental decisions and directives and will process and resolve student/parent/guardian or staff concerns.
Responsibilities: This position will be responsible for the direction of an assigned functional area within the department, often working with an Area Coordinator as co-chair. Functional assignments are flexible and will be re- evaluated as needed. Past examples of functional area assignments have included:
Resident Assistant, Graduate Assistant, or Professional Staff recruitment, selection, and development
Management of departmental student conduct initiatives
Oversight of departmental equity, diversity, and inclusion training and advocacy
Department-wide assessment strategy
Facilitation and development of living-learning initiatives, and oversight of academic and theme-based learning communities
The Assistant Director position is highly collaborative amongst departmental peers and campus colleagues, and requires strong communication, teamwork, and time-management skills. This successful candidate is expected to balance job demands with the need to collaborate with university and community colleagues to enhance the department and one's own professional development. The AD should strengthen relationships across departments and across levels to develop connections and partnerships with students, staff, and faculty.
The AD will provide direction and support to live-in staff and Student Resident Assistants in their area of oversight regarding student development and engagement, violations of community standards, crisis intervention, and conflict resolution and mediation.
The AD will execute their assigned responsibilities using a curricular approach by creating learning outcomes, identifying outcome-based strategies, and utilization of assessment tools. The AD will support building staff's implementation of an educational development plan for residents in their assigned community.
The AD will actively engage with the Northeastern students residing in university housing by attending engagements/programs, staff trainings, events, or meetings. Given that Northeastern University is a Co-Op institution, the AD will provide evening and weekend support as needed or required.
The AD will participate and facilitate regular dialogue and development efforts related to the needs of a diverse student and staff population. Additionally, they will support and contribute to the University's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
The AD may participate in an additional assignment from May to August, including working on special projects, assisting with External Events and Conference Housing, managing orientation housing, and supporting summer residential students.
The AD will co-supervise a Program Liaison from the NUin program and will be responsible for their primary supervision and student affairs development during the spring and summer 1 terms and will serve as secondary supervisor during the summer 2 and fall terms.
This staff member will participate in an on-call duty rotation with other Administrators on-call. Given this role is a live-off position with an on-call responsibility, this staff member should live no more than 45 miles from Northeastern's Boston campus and remain within a 45-mile radius from campus when actively serving as the Administrator on-Call (ADOC). The university housing is open 365 days per year and there is always multiple levels of staff on -call support each day/night, therefore some nights, weekends, and holiday support is required for this role.
