College Overview The College of Biological Sciences (CBS) is one of eight freshman-admitting colleges at the University of Minnesota. The College of Biological Sciences is located on both the Minneapolis Campus and the St. Paul Campus, consists of five academic departments (two of which are shared with the Medical School) and houses the Biotechnology Institute (which is co-financed by the College of Science and Engineering). CBS focuses its undergraduate and graduate education and research on the biological sciences, supports evidence-based teaching practices, and encourages multidisciplinary collaborations within and beyond collegiate boundaries. It is one of only two colleges in the country dedicated to the biological sciences, and its students’ academic ranking is the second highest of any college at the University. Currently, CBS is made up of 2,235 undergraduates, 279 graduate students, 108 postdoctoral researchers, 230 staff, and 152 faculty members (including Medical School faculty in shared departments). Position summary As part of ongoing efforts to develop the University of Minnesota’s North East Partnership District and BioTechnology Quadrant on the St Paul Campus, the College of Biological Sciences is poised to greatly expand the opportunities for public/private partnerships with local, national, and international industry partners. Establishing intentional partnerships will enhance CBS’ research, teaching, public service and outreach missions, while simultaneously advancing industry innovation and competitiveness. The Industry Partnership Manager is a new position that will be responsible for developing new, and managing existing, relationships to expand the portfolio of partnerships for the College across multiple industry sectors including pharma, biotech, medical, energy, environment, bio-industrial manufacturing, etc. The Partnership Manager will also contribute to the College’s efforts to actively create a diverse, equitable, inclusive environment by identifying learning opportunities for underrepresented students, creating partnerships with an eye on identifying organizations that demonstrate their commitment to DEIJ, and building workforce development programming that broadens participation and access to Biotechnology careers. Reporting directly to the CBS Dean, this position will work collaboratively with the Director of our Biotechnology Institute, CBS Advancement Team, Student Services, and other collegiate leadership to foster industry relationships.
This position is a 100% appointment in the College of Biological Sciences. The position will require local travel within Minnesota and potentially occasional domestic or international travel. The majority of responsibilities for this position can be conducted remotely, though some in-office work is expected.
The anticipated starting salary for this position is $90k.
Responsibilities 50% - Industry Engagement The Industry Partnership Manager will cultivate a robust network of industry partners by: â— Representing the College in various forums and bodies within the University and the greater community specifically in relation to industry partnerships, workforce development and biotechnology. â— Collaborating with the Communications team to develop marketing and outreach strategies to attract industry partners. â— Serving as an advocate for CBS students by communicating the unique set of experiences and talents they offer to industry partners. â— Partnering with the College’s Advancement team to encourage industry financial investment into CBS initiatives. â— Managing the College’s Industry Advisory Board, paying particular attention to building a board that reflects the diversity of Minnesota’s population.
30% - Strategic Planning The Industry Partnership Manager will create a holistic strategic plan for broadening the College’s relationships with industry partners by: â— Developing a strategic partnership strategy with the goal of building multi-faceted industry relationships that involve experiential learning opportunities for students (projects, internships, research opportunities, etc.), workforce development training, and philanthropy, with particular emphasis on aligning these relationships to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse student body. â— Managing a portfolio of partnership opportunities across multiple industry sectors (pharma/biotech/medical/energy/environment/bio-industrial manufacturing, etc.) that reflects the College’s scope of expertise, strengthens current career pathways, and establishes new opportunities in line with emerging research and development trends and student needs. â— Serving on the College’s workforce development (AcademIQ) leadership team with the Director of Operations and the Director of Outreach to determine Minnesota’s industry workforce development needs and establish a strategic roadmap for course offerings and delivery modes that include in-person, virtual, and hybrid learning opportunities and that can broaden participation in bio-industry career paths. â— Identifying, aligning, and committing resources, financial and otherwise, to reduce barriers and increase opportunities for CBS students to actively engage with industry.
20% - Collaborative Leadership The Industry Partnership Manager will work closely with members of the College’s leadership team to support the advancement of the College’s mission through enhanced industry engagement by: â— Establishing strong relationships within the University of Minnesota system and working cross functionally with internal collegiate stakeholders, including CBS Students Services, Communications & Advancement, Outreach and departmental leadership to design and implement industry-focused events and engagement opportunities. â— Advising the Dean and collegiate leadership of the needs and opportunities related to industry partnerships, workforce development and the bioeconomy.
Required Qualifications â— Bachelor's degree at least 8 years of experience 8 years of experience working in or with industry â— Committed to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion and justice and demonstrated experience centering DEIJ in professional work â— Demonstrated excellent communication and negotiation skills, including the ability to articulate the value that CBS brings to both University and industry stakeholders â— Proven ability to cultivate strategic relationships with diverse stakeholders and partners â— Driven self-starter with demonstrated experience building from the ground up and scaling programming
Preferred Qualifications â— MS, Ph.D. or MBA degree â— Working knowledge of the common business structures and practices of biotech companies â— Demonstrated understanding of the biotechnology industry landscape in the Twin Cities â— Previous experience with workforce development training â— Strong understanding of workforce development trends
