Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) is a nonresidential two-year institution of higher education that serves Central Virginia - principally residents of the City of Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson. Purpose: Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) has an opening for a part-time Transfer Project Advisor. This unique position is a partnership between PVCC and the Nudge4Solutions Lab at the University of Virginia (UVA). PVCC and the Nudge4Solutions Lab at UVA are collaborating on a grant-funded project to understand whether providing PVCC students in transfer-intending programs with personalized course recommendations will improve academic outcomes. The course recommendations will supplement the existing advising students receive. Recommendations will be generated by a machine learning algorithm developed by the UVA research team that predicts student success for each course. The Transfer Project Advisor will proactively reach out to students to schedule one-on-one meetings to discuss the recommended courses, follow-up with students to find out if they registered for the recommended courses, and offer additional assistance and meetings as needed. Use of a text messaging campaign will be incorporated to support student outreach and engagement.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide proactive and personalized outreach to the students per semester that the UVA research team assigns to receive transfer advising and personalized course information.
Oversee implementation and development of the algorithm tool through PVCCâ™s advising services
Conduct one-on-one advising meetings in the weeks leading up to each registration period
Follow up with students to inquire whether they registered for the recommended courses and to offer additional assistance or meetings as needed
Document interaction with students, using existing PVCC interaction tracking interfaces and/or through the digital interface created for this project
Participate in regular check-in meetings with the UVA research team
Experience in academic advising and/or counseling
Working knowledge of basic computer applications
Strong communication and relationship-building skills
