The Assistant Director for Student Services will engage with individual students and provide guidance to help them navigate a wide range of experiences in and out of the classroom. The Assistant Director will focus on helping students to identify their personal strengths and challenges and to make full use of available university resources to attain academic, personal and professional success. Counseling and academic advising are key components of this position.
Identifies and tracks individual and shared DEI student challenges in or out of classroom; facilitating communication between students.
Counseling students with families to identify support resources; broaden programming to include whole student support and engagement.
Counseling students who have physical, mental health, financial challenges to develop academic success plans that minimize the impact of those challenges.
Supports transfer students, non-traditional students, and students entering directly after undergraduate school in adapting to law school.
Facilitates student accommodations and challenges, including notetaking, modifications, and coordination of services. Coordinates intake of university approved SSD accommodations.
Develops and implements a wide range of programming, presentations, and activities designed to optimize the students' law school experience, including co-curricular and extracurricular pursuits.
Works closely with individual students, Law School Student Senate, and all student groups, to enrich the climate both within and outside the classroom, to provide peer-mentoring programs, and to cultivate and enhance the diversity of the Law School community.
Works with the Office of Career Planning, and DYL programs to develop programming related to professionalism and professional identity formation in anticipation of the new ABA standards.
Provides programming and coaching support for “straight through students facing challenges integrating into law school, including time management, managing extra-curriculars, and professional identity formation.
Provides academic counseling to students interested in studying abroad early in their career.
M.S.W. or Master’s degree in Counseling, Higher Education Administration, College Student Personnel, Higher Education Leadership, or other related field is preferred. Qualified candidates will have a strong college student development orientation and will be able to create a dynamic and welcoming collegiate environment. A highly qualified candidate will have excellent organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, as well as demonstrated cultural competencies and ability to work within and contribute to a diverse campus community. Candidate will demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, counseling experience, and project management skills. Experience with accommodations and evaluation is preferred. Candidate will demonstrate a collaborative work-style, team-building and leadership skills. Candidate will understand student retention. Candidate will exercise sound judgment and handle confidential information appropriately according to FERPA and other compliance requirements. Willingness to work evenings and weekends is required.
