Summary of Duties:
The College of Medicine Learning Specialist leads, supervises, and provides individual and group learning support to MD students in all four years. This includes support for needs related to the pre-clerkship curriculum, clerkship curriculum, as well as national board exam support. The Learning Specialist develops and identifies tools and resources to assist students in their learning of medical and clinical knowledge. The Learning Specialist will collaborate with the WSU Spokane campus Student Success office to assist in connecting medical students with student tutors and reasonable accommodations. This position reports to the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs but works closely with the Associate Dean for Accreditation, Assessment, and Evaluation.
Duties and Responsibilities:
40% Student Learning Support and Advising
Provide learning support and advising for MD students that assists with identifying and resolving academic difficulties in both medicine content and testing.
Assess student academic needs and provide students with intellectual and academic support that will contribute to their success through graduation.
Develop, organize, and execute effective, individual educational plans with schedule review, time management, organizational strategies, self-assessment, goal setting, and overall tracking of academic progress as a focus.
Communicate with and support students who have been identified as having academic difficulty, including those who fail an exam or course.
Provide individual evaluation and academic support for preparation for both classroom and national exams such as the USMLE Step 1 and Step 2.
Monitor academic progress of students.
Manage all working relationships with student and staff in a confidential manner.
35% Development and Delivery of Academic Support and Accommodations Programming
Develop, implement, and execute programs to identify and assist students who may be at risk for academic difficulty.
Develop and deliver individual, large and small group sessions for medical students on learning, study and success strategies. This may include study strategies, time management, test-taking skills, requesting feedback, learning theory, etc.
Manage academic support services developed within the College of Medicine for students, including those with course content deficiencies.
Participate in appropriate College of Medicine committees and activities to gain a better understanding of the educational process.
Coordinate with WSU Spokane student tutoring program to connect medical students with student tutors.
Partner with the WSU Access Office to manage academic and clinical support for students with documented disabilities.
Coordinate with COM Offices (such as Assessment, Curriculum, and IT) for providing approved accommodations that students are to receive from their documented disabilities. Follow-through on purchases that are needed, such as speech to text software, ensuring they are received by students.
Assist students with applying for accommodations for their national exams.
20% Develop and Oversee Resources
Work with Associate Dean for Accreditation, Assessment, and Evaluation and the Associate Dean for Curriculum to develop academic support resources.
Develop website content with support resources and program offerings.
Determine support services needed via feedback from medical students.
Utilize feedback from Assessment, Student Affairs and College Faculty members to provide relevant resources to medical students.
Perform other related work
Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of full-time academic advising experience in a college or university or related experience. A Master's degree in a related field may substitute for one (1) year of professional work experience. Any combination of relevant education and professional academic advising experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a yearforyear basis. Positions who will lead or supervisor will require one or more years of full-time experience leading or directing the work of others.
Demonstrated excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office including Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively and positively in a diverse environment.
Experience advising/counseling students.
Experience or knowledge of coordinating student services programs.
Experience analyzing, evaluating, using professional judgment and/or applying a comprehensive depth of knowledge of student issues.
Previous work experience with students in health professions or other, similar setting.
Master's degree in related field.
Previous work experience at an institution of higher education.
One or more years of experience advising/counseling students in a higher education setting or equivalent.
Experience working with diverse faculty, students and staff.
Familiarity with Washington State University academic rules and regulations.
Professional experience related to the design, implementation, and evaluation of academic programs and strategic planning at college.
