The Office of Undergraduate Admissions at Johns Hopkins University is looking for a curious, driven, persuasive, and vibrant Content Marketing Specialist (Communications Specialist) to join our team. The Content Marketing Specialist plays an integral role as part of the marketing and communications team, helping to drive the development and execution of print and digital communications. The Content Marketing Specialist serves as our primary copywriter, ensuring content is compelling, factual, audience-focused, and within brand standards. In partnership with our social media team, the Content Marketing Specialist will also support the development of social media content, including some graphic design. As a part of a creative team, this role brings original ideas to conceive, revamp, and revise a wide range of marketing materials.
Reporting to the Associate Director of Marketing & Communications for Undergraduate Admissions, this position will work with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions marketing & communications team, administrators, admissions counselors, and other staff to support communication, recruitment, and yield efforts.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Serves as the lead copywriter for undergraduate admissions, creating goal-driven communications to constituents (prospective students and families, high school counselors, and media).
Writes and curates copy for print publications, email campaigns, website and blogs, media requests, presentations and speeches, , video scripts, social media, and press releases.
Conducts interviews with students, faculty, and staff to curate content for print and digital formats.
Creates graphics for social media using Adobe Creative Cloud and Canva.
Ensures that all content is fresh and current, has a consistent voice and tone, and aligns with the overarching Undergraduate Admissions branding guidelines.
Regularly updates the admissions website to ensure content is fresh, accurate, and up-to-date.
Collaborates with major school offices, departments, and student groups to capture student and community stories, and craft the stories for a public audience.
Participates in planning and brainstorming sessions with office leadership to ensure that content in all areas remains creative and effective.
Edits own work and the work of others, to include re-writing when necessary.
Serves as an expert on university and undergraduate admissions copywriting style guidelines.
Completes fact-checking, grammar checking, and proofreading of all materials.
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
Bachelor's Degree in Marketing, Communications, Writing, or related field required.
Two years related experience required, preferably in a writing or marketing role.
Four years related experience preferred.
Prior experience managing publications and managing website edits in WordPress is preferred.
Experience in a higher education setting preferred.
Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Special Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities:
Demonstrated ability to work independently and take initiative in creating new content for the web and publications, while also maintaining a collaborative relationship with staff and outside vendors.
Demonstrated abilities as a writer are required, conveying complex subject matter to a general audience.
Must have a strong and demonstrated background in writing for multiple audiences.
Knowledge of basic design skills to build out graphic content in Adobe Creative Cloud or Canva.
The candidate must be organized, detail-oriented, and adept at juggling multiple assignments to meet deadlines.
The candidate must also be open to, and seek out, feedback on their writing and demonstrate that they are able to implement feedback efficiently and effectively.
Must work well in a fast-paced environment and be able to manage multiple high-priority assignments and be comfortable collaborating and taking feedback from different constituents across campus.
Must understand the importance of effective communications and be eager to understand fully the admissions cycle as well as best marketing practices in higher education.
Communicate well with technical staff and other members of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions team.
JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
