Dept Marketing Statement The Educational Opportunity Programs (EOP) provides a variety of academic and personal support programs designed to improve the retention and academic success of first-generation college students from low-income and historically underserved backgrounds to ensure they successfully complete their undergraduate education and acquire the skills to prepare for graduate and professional school, as well as future leadership roles. This position has a specialized focus on serving students by collaborating with departments across the campus to implement activities that build transformative student experiences. EOP resides within the Division of Student Affairs and Success at UC Santa Cruz.
Supervises EOP Assistant Directors and support staff, and administers a portion of an Academic Achievement program and budget. Independently oversees day-to-day operations, and determines goals and performance expectations of subordinates. Assists subordinates on most complex and sensitive issues.
Under the direction of the EOP Director, the EOP Associate Director serves in a leadership role within the office, help manage the day-to-day operations, supervise Assistant Directors and/or academic counselors, and coordinates programs to support the holistic success of EOP students. The EOP Associate Director will work closely with the EOP Director, and operate in absence of the director, to devise strategies to ensure direct robust and effective services to support first-generation, low-income, underrepresented and educationally disadvantaged students by providing approval to budgets, assessing programs, and supporting their direct reports in project development and coordination. The incumbent also provides academic and personal counseling/guidance and manages complex student cases to propel their development and success as university students, as needed. In addition, the EOP Associate Director collaborates with campus partners including the Colleges, Academic Departments, faculty, student service units and student organizations on retention/student success initiatives. The incumbent is readily accessible to faculty, staff, students and parents/family members and coordinates communication and student case management. The EOP Associate Director conducts project management including data collection, evaluation and reporting. The incumbent will supervise, evaluate, manage and train professional and student staff and engage in professional development to implement best practices and research based methodologies.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION Salary Information: $76,000 - $80,000 / Annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES 35% - Leadership & Supervision: Monitors employee performance and provides direction and assistance.
Counsels and evaluates employee performance.
Recommends employees for promotion.
Recommends corrective action, hiring, and separation of employees when appropriate.
Leads the EOP advising team and services within the EOP office.
Provides supervision and guidance to the academic counselors, peer advisers and student staff that results in high quality services to the EOP student community.
Convenes meetings, develops agendas and facilitates team work sessions within the office and with partners.
Develops and recommends policies and practices focused on the academic success, retention and graduation of EOP students.
Trains and evaluates academic counselors on their performance.
Ensures high quality services by implementing evaluation methods and direct observation of counseling services.
Develops and sustains effective working relationships and partnerships with the academic support and student services offices on campus.
Serves as the lead and point of contact for the EOP office to the campus and external community.
Represents the EOP Director at campus meetings and functions as needed.
15% - Academic/Personal Counseling and Case Management
Solves the most complex and sensitive issues involving counseling for 'at risk' students.
Meets with students individually and in small groups to assess student needs, strengths/challenges and provides guidance/intervention to problem-solve and support student success.
Meets with students individually and in small groups to provide counseling in the areas of academic planning, course selection, as well as, adjusting to the university, campus life and academic setting.
Assesses and diagnoses underlying and root issues/challenges that interfere with student success.
Develops, facilitates and monitors student action plans to increase academic and social success.
Prioritizes most complex student cases to ensure timely intervention is applied before a student discontinues their studies at UCSC.
Communicates with EOP Director, EOP/LSS/DRC/STARS/College Advisers and other colleagues on campus to track and resolve student issues.
Engages with colleagues in departments such as faculty, academic staff, the Colleges, Financial Aid, Housing, Student Business Services and others to advocate on behalf of students and to seek resolutions to a myriad of issues impacting the retention and graduation pathway of students.
Refers students to academic and student support services. Follows-up and tracks utilization to ensure interventions are being applied.
Works closely with EOP Director and other senior leaders to manage student cases that require the attention of the high-level attention, undertaking initial information gathering, developing recommendations for response, taking the initiative to mobilize appropriate responses and/or services.
Escalates student cases as appropriate to the Campus Life Slug Support Team, Counseling and Psychological Services and EOP Director as appropriate.
Communicates regularly with students including students who are on leave or have taken time off and ensures they have an action plan to return and complete their studies. Maintains an institutional relationship with students who take time off.
15% - Project and Budget Management
Coordinates special projects and initiatives related to educational equity, retention and graduation of EOP students.
Serves on campus committees to inform and provide the perspective of EOP student experiences.
Collaborates with campus units to increase the utilization and inclusion of EOP students.
Develops and monitors project budget plans and tracks actual expenses to spending projections.
Acts as designated approver for project-based and/or student award related allocations.
As assigned, collaborates with student services units, academic departments and off-campus partners.
Coordinates and assists with other duties as assigned.
15% - Program Evaluation and Reporting
Assists with evaluation and assessing program / department operational efficiency, and recommends changes for improvement.
Prepares monthly, quarterly and annual reports documenting patterns and trends in student cases and emerging best practices/solutions in serving students;
Regularly tracks, reports and briefs the EOP Director and/or other senior leaders and campus colleagues on the status of student cases.
Researches, monitors and tracks policy issues and practices related to student success, retention and graduation.
Develops forms and instruments for intake, monitoring and reporting on student cases.
Participates in the development of annual goals and calendar of the EOP office and the Student Success cluster.
10% - Program Development and Coordination for At-Risk Students
Makes recommendations concerning improvements of program/function to manager to provide services to 'at risk' students more effectively and/or comprehensively.
Develops and organizes effective retention programs and strategies for students who are first in their families to attend college, come from historically low-income backgrounds and under-resourced schools and communities.
Develops and implements programs and workshops that build upon the strengths of EOP students with learning outcomes related to academic and student success.
Collaborates with appropriate campus units to develop and implement study skills, career development, academic success and student leadership seminars and workshops.
May develop and teach courses that promote the academic success of EOP students.
Supervises and guides EOP student staff on program implementation and support.
10% - Professional Development and Training
Participates in professional development activities to continually evolve best practices and stay abreast of innovative and research based practices.
Disseminates best practices and associated student outcomes to the campus community and at conferences.
Serves as a trainer and content expert on issues related to first-generation to college, low-income, immigrant and underrepresented students.
Educates the campus community on effective counseling practices for EOP students.
Develops, delivers and evaluates training programs to build the capacity of student staff and colleagues that provide direct services to EOP students.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience/training.
Knowledge of the theories and practice of counseling, learning, human and career development.
Strong supervision and coaching skills with the ability to lead the EOP academic counselors, peer advisers and other staff including: organizing work flow to accomplish established objectives, delegate responsibility, train/evaluate subordinate effectiveness and administer discipline as necessary.
Experience leading a team with ability to step-in for the director as needed and serve as an effective ambassador for EOP to the campus community and external audiences.
Demonstrated experience and achievement advising and/or counseling students who are first-generation to college, low-income, underrepresented, non-traditional and/or immigrant backgrounds;
Demonstrated experience in case management with students on a college campus.
Demonstrated ability to initiate, develop and coordinate services/programs for students
