Position Overview The CEHD Career Services Coordinator of Employer Relations position is an integral part of the CEHD Career Services team within CEHD Student Services. This critical role serves the entire college by strategically identifying, building and maintaining employer, staff, and faculty relationships to create and ensure access to internships, experiential learning and employment opportunities for CEHD students and alumni.
The Coordinator of Employer Relations manages on-campus recruiting for CEHD and develops programming, events and services that connect employers to CEHD students and alumni. This role also collaborates with University partners to create further opportunities for CEHD students to connect with employers. An important aspect of this role is to be responsive to the diverse needs of CEHD students and minimizing challenges and barriers that unique student populations face.
CEHD serves a diverse population of approximately 5,000 undergraduate and graduate students from various majors/degrees spanning multiple industries and career fields. The Coordinator of Employer Relations works with a wide and varied population of corporate, nonprofit and government employers with opportunities in business, education, human/social services, healthcare, recreation, and sports.
Cultivate and manage relationships with local, regional, national and international employers focused on the goal of ensuring access to job, internship and experiential learning opportunities for CEHD students/alumni. Utilize employer database to manage employer relationships and track/analyze employer contacts. Counsel employers on trends, best practices, CEHD student profiles and programs, and recruiting statistics.
Act as a resource for CEHD faculty, staff and students regarding employer relations/engagement and provide expertise as needed.
Convey CEHD’s mission and highest brand image in all interactions with employers to foster further engagement.
On-Campus Recruiting Management
Lead the CEHD on-campus recruiting program (on-campus interviews, information sessions, networking), developing opportunities that connect employers and CEHD students/alumni. Serve as point of contact for all inquiries pertaining to on-campus recruiting for CEHD. Create and implement innovative on-campus recruitment strategies that are focused on the unique and industry-specific needs of employers while remaining student centered.
Inform employers of all resources on campus available to assist them in their diversity recruiting efforts. Determine the most effective methods to connect with CEHD students and alumni from diverse backgrounds with the goal of reaching all qualified students. Aid employers in creating inclusive job descriptions and campus events, and coach employers on ensuring access and equity in career opportunities and programming for all students.
Clearly communicate all Career Services processes, including the Career Services Center and Interview Center procedures/deadlines, university policy, and ethical/professional conduct with employers, holding employers accountable to these policies.
Stay current and up to date on hiring trends and salary information as it pertains to CEHD program and degree areas and share findings and information regularly with CEHD Career Services staff and with students, employers and CEHD staff and faculty as needed.
Collaborate on U of M centralized employer relations initiatives that support CEHD students and alumni.
Serve as CEHD’s Handshake administrator managing and providing leadership on all aspects of the on-line recruiting system and serving as a liaison to the University’s Career Services Office.
Serve as the Handshake content expert for CEHD, providing training as needed for all employers, students, alumni, staff and faculty with questions regarding Handshake and its functionality. Includes working with faculty who use Handshake in their curriculum.
Ensure accountability by overseeing and guaranteeing timely and accurate reviewing and approving of recruiter accounts, position postings, and student/alumni resumes. Train staff in use of the Handshake system. Monitor postings to ensure all postings represent legitimate employers, meeting state and federal law.
Represent CEHD system-wide in the Handshake User’s group for cohesive management and policies and improving the user experience. Assist with Request for Proposals and relationship management with vendor.
Strategic Communications and Marketing
Hire, train and supervise 1-2 student staff focused on unit level marketing/social media, job approvals in Handshake, and organizing of employer relations events and programs.
Promote the CEHD Employer Relations program and services to employers, students, alumni, and CEHD staff and faculty and develop internal and external communication strategies to increase awareness and usage of services.
Design and implement a year-round communications/marketing plan for career fairs/employer events, that address the wide range of degrees and career interests of CEHD students and alumni.
Oversee the development and implementation of a uniform brand message that encourages employers to recruit CEHD students and alumni and continually refine and hone CEHD’s brand messaging to speak directly to employers.
Lead the creation and maintenance of all employer relations communications including website content, electronic newsletter, print materials and social media in collaboration with the CEHD communications and web teams.
Update, maintain and continuously evaluate and improve the Employer Relations section of the CEHD Career Services website meeting the specific needs of students and of employers from a wide range of industry areas.
Assessment, Evaluation and Data Tracking
Track hiring as a result of on-campus recruitment efforts. Conduct on-going evaluation and assessment of the employer relations programs and services focused on effectiveness, outcomes and accessibility. Analyze data, produce reports and recommend strategies to expand and improve employer programs and services regularly.
Analyze graduate survey data and identify employment trends to best provide internship and employment opportunities for students.
Career Services Events
Envision, create, plan, implement, and evaluate events that connect CEHD students/alumni with employers for networking and recruitment purposes.
Plan and coordinate CEHD major- and industry-specific career fairs partnering with CEHD academic departments and student services advisors.
Track the career fair/event budget including income and expenses and make recommendations to the Associate Director of Career Services.
Collect and track data on attendance and participation at employer events and career fairs evaluating the success of participation and making recommendations for continued event improvement.
Collaborate across U of M career services offices on University-wide employer events/ initiatives (e.g. U of M Job and Internship Fair) and participate in relevant committees.
Collaborate with career services offices in state associations (e.g. MCUCSA, MEFA) on employer events/initiatives and participate in relevant committees.
Outreach, Workshops and Presentations
Create and deliver classroom presentations to CEHD students focused on the use of Handshake and making successful connections with employers utilizing engaging multi-media and activities that are effective for various learning styles.
Participate in CEHD, CEHD Student Services and U of M events/programming such as College day and admissions/orientation events.
Miscellaneous and Campus Involvement (10%)
Participate in projects/initiatives or coursework related to the continuous improvement of CEHD Career Services.
Mentor and support CEHD Career Services graduate interns and practicum students. Provide training in Career Services operations related to employment.
Serve on Student Services, College and University-wide committees and workgroups as needed.
Bachelor’s degree College Student Personnel, Human Resource Development, Human Resources Management, Higher Education Administration or related field.
Four years of experience in employer relations, career services, college recruiting or related fields.
Proven commitment to equity and diversity and a passion for supporting the career development and success of all students.
At least one year experience creating, planning, marketing and executing accessible events, programs and services that create a welcoming and inclusive environment.
Must be an effective collaborator who is self-motivated, enthusiastic, positive and goal-oriented with an entrepreneurial spirit. Demonstrated ability to be flexible and adaptable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Demonstrated strong presentation skills with experience creating and conducting presentations/workshops tailored to specific populations/audiences.
Experience working with a program/unit that serves a diverse student body, including first-generation, low-income students, students with disabilities, students of color, and/or English language learners.
Proven ability to develop authentic and effective working relationships with employers from various industry areas and a community of students, alumni, staff, faculty, and administrators.
Knowledge of careers and employers related to CEHD varied majors/degrees and population-specific programs.
Outstanding verbal and written communications skills, evidenced in various formats including in-person, email, video, and on-line.
Significant technology expertise including experience using social media (e.g. LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, blogs) to market services and programs. Data management skills including experience with CRM, database systems or project management systems.
Demonstrated project management and strategic planning skills with the ability to see the big picture while maintaining attention to detail.
Experience in program evaluation, data collection, and report writing.
