Both disciplines provide the opportunity and means for meeting major scientific and technological challenges, such as addressing climate change, increasing the world's food supply, synthesizing new materials, and discovering and delivering important drugs. The college prides itself on a balanced approach to science, with research areas ranging from experimental to theoretical. Faculty in both departments are engaged in teaching and research in a wide range of applications and sub-disciplines.
Administers a defined operational program or activities which may include some of the following functions: finance, facilities, payroll, space planning, student services, human resources, communications, informational technology or safety.
Works closely with Regional RA to develop and maintain budgets and forecast spending for the faculty members they support;
Gathers and analyzes financial and other resource data; prepares reports or analyses as directed by the faculty member.
Functions as a resource on issues such as payroll, purchasing, safety and other campus processes and procedures for the faculty supervisor and their group members.
Establishes an affiliate status with LBNL to enable and facilitate hiring of group members, track funding at LBNL and enable procurement activities such as travel and purchasing directly through LBNL funding sources.
Facilitate procurement of highly specialized and fabricated equipment.
Arrange purchases, repair and maintenance of this equipment.
Coordinate with University, College and LBNL equipment managers to conduct the annual equipment inventory for research groups.
Provide internal documentation for removal or addition of equipment. Maintain records on all purchases.
Track purchase orders, shop charges and maintenance work on equipment and facilities.
Obtain and renew maintenance contracts on all equipment.
When the PI serves as chair of a seminar or symposia program, provide direct administrative support. These may include: arranging the logistics for the seminar presentations, contacting faculty members to schedule meeting times with the speaker, etc.;
Prepare final version of manuscripts containing complex technical terminology and figures for publication in scientific journals, both print and electronic.
Preparation may include editing, formatting, preparation of photographic material, archiving, and corresponding with editorial staff;
Coordinate with LBNL the preparation of presentations and technical drawings, seminars, examinations and final publications and development and maintenance of the database and storage for figures and other graphics; Ensure PI's published work conforms to journal specifications. This includes maintaining files for up-to-date 'Instructions for Authors';
Keep the CV and publication list current.
Ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns.
Solid communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff verbally and in writing.
Solid organizational skills and ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality.
