Dept Marketing Statement The Undergraduate Advising Team consists of the Program Coordinator, and two student Peer Advisors. Our staff have a strong spirit of teamwork and excellent customer service. We embrace UCSC's Principles of Community in meeting the needs of our diverse constituents.
The department offers five undergraduate degrees including combined majors with biology, earth sciences, and economics; and a degree in Agroecology. There are over 650 proposed and declared majors. We also have a robust internship program, and many field study opportunities. Sub-units within the department are the Center for Integrated Spatial Research (CISR) and the Kenneth S. Norris Center for Natural History (NCNH). We are also closely affiliated with the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems (CASFS). We also work closely with staff in the UC Natural Reserve System whose offices are in space assigned to our department.
Applies professional concepts to independently provide prescriptive advice on academic policies and procedures for an academic department / college / school, including major and minor requirements, and all aspects of course requirements for degree or program completion. Receives assistance on more complex issues.
Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule Salary Information: $28.50 -$30.53 / hourly. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

Job Duties 20% - Monitors and evaluates students' completion of academic requirements.
20% - Applies professional concepts to independently provide prescriptive advice and assistance to students on academic and degree progress and major requirements for the department / school / college.
15% - Advocates student interests to, and provide analytical support and advice to the department's Curriculum Committee on a wide range of policies and procedures applying to ENVS majors.
5% - Assists students in determining a major, alternative academic options, scheduling conflicts, and similar issues.
5% - Identifies student needs for programs and services.
5% - Refers students to non-academic resources as appropriate.
5% - Applies articulated courses to program / degree requirements and certifies degree completion.
5% - Advises on moderately complex issues such as multiple degrees, or withdrawal from the University.
5% - Communicates and exchanges information with other units of the organization and makes referrals to help students with their academic program (e.g., health service, disabled students program, Colleges / Schools, transfer center, academic departments, graduate division, etc.).
5% - Provides information to students on programs with special, clearly articulated eligibility requirements such as honors programs, awards, fellowships, scholarships, and advanced level courses.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Basic knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving.
Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original idea to solve problems.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including active listening.
Ability to multi-task.
Master's degree in Advising, Higher Education, or related area.
Knowledge of departmental / school / college courses and majors.
Knowledge of department / school / college policies, procedures, and requirements.
General knowledge of the UCSC campus. Familiarity with university programs, administrative units, and range of student services. Experience with UCSC computing applications or equivalent: AIS, EAB / Slug Success, OCA, Infoview, CCLP, CruzPay, WCMS, StudentERSystem.
Experience recruiting, interviewing, selecting and supervising student employees.
Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
Availability to work a variable schedule including occasional evenings and weekends.
