The position of Assistant Director for Residential Student Support Programs has the primary responsibility for the development, implementation, and assessment of academic engagement, leadership development, civic and social engagement, and student support programs within the residence life program. The Assistant Director will be responsible for providing leadership in promoting academics, leadership development, retention, and student learning that will enhance the academic and civic mission of the institution. The Assistant Director will coordinate the administrative and programming responsibilities for University Success, UHRL's in-hall academic support centers, and the Residential Leadership & Engagement Center (ReLEC), UHRL's in-hall student leadership and engagement center.
Additionally, the individual in this position will work to develop and train student leaders related to academic engagement, leadership development, and student support programs. The Assistant Director will provide residential case management to help residents persist at Portland State University. The Assistant Director is expected to foster healthy environments for learning and social interaction that promote and model teamwork and establishment of inclusive, supportive, collaborative, service-oriented, multicultural environments. The Assistant Director is a member of the Residence Life Leadership Team.
Master's degree with four or more years of professional experience working in a college or university housing and residence life department required.
Skills in program development, organizing and planning.
Experience working with faculty.
Experience supervising a full-time professional(s).
Training or experience in leadership development, supervision, program planning and evaluation.
Strong problem-solving skills in the context of interpersonal and group relations, strong analytical skills, and strong oral communication skills.
Ability to work effectively on a team.
Scheduling flexibility to meet residents' needs.
Must pass a criminal background check.
Experience in areas of staff supervision, housing leadership, learning communities, student success initiatives, academic standards, leadership development, advising student organizations, event planning and the ability to work within a collaborative environment and with diverse populations.
Theme and Living-Learning Community experience.
Experience working with traditional first-year college transition issues.
Knowledge of upper class and/or transfer students unique needs
Demonstrated ability to blend academic and residential components of student life is highly desirable.
Experience working with effective practices addressing first year student success and retention.
Detail orientated and able to assess needs, plan, and implement new program.
Coursework or experience with conflict management. Mediation skills, conduct process and communication/active listening.
