Reporting to the Associate Dean for Advising, the Academic Advisor is a member of the Center for University Advising, which is responsible for non-major academic advising for all undergraduate students from orientation through graduation. Academic Advisors build a relationship with an assigned group of students, assisting them with academic planning and decision making, making referrals to campus resources, and supporting studentsâ€™ academic success. Academic Advisors maintain student records and monitor the academic progress of their advisees. They also support the programming efforts of the Center and the Division of Student Affairs.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: â€¢Serves as advisor to an assigned group of students across all class years, from the point of entry through graduation. â€¢Provides accurate information about academic policies, programs, and options. â€¢Assists students in the development of meaningful educational plans. â€¢Supports students by helping them to identify and assess alternatives and the impact of their decisions on their educational plans. â€¢Assists students who are experiencing academic difficulty or are at risk of departure. â€¢Supports students as they transition into and out of college, develops greater responsibility for their educational goals, and evaluates their academic options. â€¢Proactively maintains contact with advisees and provides continuity throughout their time at Hofstra University. â€¢Collaborates with CUAâ€™s retention outreach staff in monitoring the academic progress of advisees and communicating with faculty as appropriate. â€¢Develops strong relationships with campus partners in assigned academic departments and university offices. â€¢Serves as an informed resource for students to make appropriate referrals to other university resources, including academic departments, Student Health and Counseling Center, the Center for Career Design and Development, Student Access Services, and the Center for Academic Excellence.
The Academic Advisor will develop strong capability in using the Education Advisory Boardâ€™s (EAB) retention software Navigate for creating academic plans and maintaining accurate electronic records on students and will assist in the implementation of group advising programs to promote the mission and goals of the Center for University Advising. Participation in Division of Student Affairs initiatives and evening and weekend work may occasionally be required.
