The College is seeking current graduate school students, including those in the application process or starting graduate programs in Fall 2021, to serve as apprentices supporting high schools in the Fremont, Newark and Union City school districts. The College would like to strengthen the pathway and services offered to these students by having a consistent presence on the high school campuses. This apprenticeship provides students with the skills, expertise, and experience necessary to enter professional roles in high school and higher education environments. This opportunity will equip apprentices with general and in-depth knowledge into a vast range of student support services and programs.
Position: PURPOSE The purpose of the Graduate Apprentice (GA) is to guide feeder school students on the pathway to Ohlone College. GAs will develop a relationship with assigned feeder school sites and students by being present on the school campuses. The GA will provide information, answer questions, and will assist in the recruitment, enrollment and matriculation of Ohlone College feeder school students.
Duties and Responsibilities: OBJECTIVE The objective of the Student Pathways Apprenticeship Program is to develop professionals who can, under the supervision of a designated manager, aid feeder school students. GAs will serve a designated location and provide student assistance in career assessment, college applications, financial literacy and applications, matriculation assistance and transition. GAs will also be versed in various student support programs (i.e. Umoja, Puente, Career Services, Undocumented Student Resources, Student Accessibility Services, EOPS, etc.) GAs are essential to creating a model for student integration into the college to increase opportunities for success by introducing the college and its services to feeder school students. GAs will be trained to assist students and high school staff in the following areas: admissions, Guided Pathways interest areas, basic residency questions, dual enrollment processes & paperwork, financial literacy, financial aid applications, and Undocumented student access. GAs will also provide information on Ohlone College programs that include EOPS, Puente, Umoja, SAS, Career Planning, etc. GAs will develop their skills, abilities, and sensitivities in assisting a diverse student population in an educational setting. GAs will employ use of technology and communication systems to generate reports, track student progress, inform students of critical information essential to their success at Ohlone and other duties as assigned that support student success.
DURATION Apprenticeships are renewable on an annual basis. GAs are eligible to participate in the program for up to three (3) years while enrolled in a qualified educational program and shall work a maximum of 20 hours per week with the assignment spanning 45 weeks per year including regular and summer terms.
ASSESSMENT GAs will work under the direction and supervision of a college administrator. Their progress is measured each semester through direct observation, student surveys, mentoring, and ongoing training sessions.

Implement activities that address and resolve student barriers to entering college that promote retention and student success

Minimum Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications A. Recent completion of a Bachelors degree or equivalent required B. Enrollment in, and in good standing at a masters program at a regionally accredited college or university is preferred. C. Demonstration of effective oral and written communication skills, including presentations; D. Possess a working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite programs; E. Possess good record keeping skills with an attention to detail; F. Possess the ability to provide an equitable and inclusive working and educational environment; G. Possess a sensitivity to people from various academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, religious, gender, physical ability and religious backgrounds.
Physical Characteristics: WORKING CONDITIONS GAs will be assigned to a school site within the Ohlone Community College district, which include the cities of Fremont, Newark and Union City. The work assignment will consist of a maximum of 20 hours per week over a span of 45 weeks. Sixteen (16) hours will be served at the school site over a minimum of two days per week, and four (4) hours will be assigned at the Ohlone College campus for meetings and training activities. Reliable transportation to and from assigned locations is required.
The college is operating remotely for spring 2020 although there will be occasions for the GAs to come on campus for in-person training and meetings.
Starting Salary Range: GAs are compensated on a pay scale that offers graduated hourly payrates and steps as follows: Step A: $16.00; Step B:$17.00; Step C:$18.00 and Step D: $19:00. The rate of pay will increase a step for each year that the GA completes in the program.
