The transition from student to professional is integral to the success of Colorado School of Mines graduates and to the mission of Mines as an institution. The Career and Professional Development Advisor will provide career guidance, professional development, and job search assistance to students and recent graduates through a strategic plan of outreach and programming. Under the general supervision of the Associate Director of Career Advising within the Career Center, the mission of the Career and Professional Development Advisor is to assist students in developing career readiness skills critical for the effective transition from school to career, to build a foundation for life-long career development and advancement. The mission of this position is accomplished through a strategic plan of outreach, events, data analysis and collection, internal and external contacts. This role includes the ability to evaluate and/or implement career, education, and employment decisions and plans.
Career Advising & Professional Development
Advise students and recent graduates on career exploration and professional development practices.
Provide assistance and instruction on resume and CV writing, cover and thank-you letter development, interview presentation skills, and other tools and materials needed for an effective jobs search.
Instruct students and recent graduates on use of online recruiting systems and the Career Center policies and procedures related to services.
Provide job searching assistance for various levels of industry, research, managerial, academic, and international opportunities, including experiential learning opportunities such as internships and cooperative education.
Conduct practice interviews and consult on contract offers and salary negotiations.
Coordinate strategic outreach efforts to expand career services for specific populations of students, schedule and deliver group presentations and workshops to students and graduates.
Programming & Projects
Deliver group presentations and career-related workshops to students, prospective students, and graduates.
Assess needs of specific student populations, which may include graduate students, international students, veterans, students with disabilities, LGTBQ+ individuals, and/or multicultural engineering student groups. Develop and implement targeted services to identified groups.
Provide instruction for CSM 250 “Engineering Your Career Path” 1-credit course.
Present to faculty and other campus constituents on Career Center services, offerings, policies and procedures.
Create and deliver webinars and alternative presentation formats for students and graduates.
Assist as needed with all Career Center programs, events, activities, workshops, and customer requests.
Represent the college and career services at various events, including but not limited to, promoting career services to faculty and staff, and presenting recruiting-related programs to students.
Identify and develop projects or efforts which further the Career Center and Mines mission and also reflect personal interests. Examples may include, but are not restricted to, career and professional development which supports Mines diversity and inclusion, on-line programs, or web site and graphic design.
Oversee small budget for programming and supervise a student peer advisor.
Data Collection & Reporting
Assist the Associate Director of Career Center Advising to maintain current student databases as it relates to students’ first destination tracking.
Contribute to and manage assigned sections of annual report and other ad hoc requests.
Maintain program records and statistical information as it related to student employment and program accountabilities.
Other duties as assigned
On occasion, this position may be assigned other duties needed to help drive to the vision, fulfill the mission, and uphold Mines’ and the Department’s organizational values. This includes support for departmental commitments and efforts, including Career Days.
Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline from an accredited four-year institution of higher education.
Experience in advising postsecondary students and graduates on career development and job searching techniques.
Strong presentation skills.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with postsecondary staff and faculty.
Strong interpersonal and communications skills; ability to analyze and solve problems.
Ability to coordinate and organize workshops, meetings and events, organizing resources and establishing priorities.
Commitment to creating an inclusive environment and demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, faculty and staff of diverse backgrounds.
Experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and other relevant technologies.
Master’s degree in relevant discipline, including Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, Business, Social Sciences, etc.
Experience in gathering data, compiling and analyzing information, and preparing reports.
Knowledge of college recruiting principles, procedures and databases.
Experience working directly with engineering and technology students.
Knowledge of laws and regulations as applicable to the employment recruitment of interns, co-ops and new graduates.
Experience with online programs and delivering services through virtual or remote methods.
