The Office for Campus Life (OCL) coordinates a wide range of services supporting student interests and involvement. The Office for Campus Life serves as a resource for life outside of the classroom, promoting and encouraging a healthy balance between curricular and co-curricular experiences and opportunities. The staff of the Office for Campus Life is responsible for student leadership development, campus programming, student group advising and mentoring, as well as the daily operations of the Mayer Campus Center, Hayes House and Curtis Hall. Finally, the Office for Campus Life takes a leadership role in the planning and implementation of New Student Orientation.
The Assistant Director for Campus Life - Orientation and New Student Programs is a 13-month appointment, professional staff position with responsibilities in supporting New Student Orientation and other new student initiatives, including additional program support for current sophomore class in response to their first-year experience during the pandemic year. The position reports to the Director of Campus Life and serves as an integral member of the Campus Life team. The Assistant Director will work directly with the Director in planning and coordinating all aspects of New Student Orientation. The Assistant Director will coordinate hiring, training and serve as the direct supervisor and mentor of 2-3 full-time summer undergraduate student orientation coordinators, as well as a summer graduate intern. The Assistant Director will provide ongoing leadership development opportunities during their appointments. In addition, the Assistant Director will hire, train, and supervise twelve Orientation Support Staff and serve as an advisor and mentor to other student leaders participating in New Student Orientation. The Assistant Director will convene the New Student Orientation planning committee and serve as a member of the Pre-Orientation planning committee. They will serve as the direct contact to incoming students, parents, and families. In collaboration with the Student Affairs Communications team, the Assistant Director will manage all communications to new students and families. The Assistant Director will manage the orientation website, email, phone line, social media content and be responsible for design of publications and branding in parternship with Student Affairs Communications. The Assistant Director will serve as the liaison to several campus departments involved with planning aspects of New Student Orientation including Academic Affairs, Admissions, Athletics, Campus Life, Communications, Community Relations, Division of Student Diversity and Inclusion, Facilities, Health Services, Residential Life and Learning, SMFA Student Affairs, Student Affairs, Student Services, Tufts Dining.
The Assistant Director will coordinate directly with Admissions for updates on incoming class and plans for Orientation representation during JumboDays. The Assistant Director will also serve as the main contact for all departments and staff involved with Orientation and create plans for regular communications, information sessions and trainings. In addition, the Assistant Director will serve as the University contact for all outside vendors and contractors involved with Orientation. Along with the Director the Assistant Director will oversee and manage the New Student Orientation budget. The Assistant Director will coordinate review and evaluation efforts and work directly with Institutional Research on implementing annual New Student Orientation survey. The Assistant Director will provide follow-up throughout the year regarding survey results to all constituents. The Assistant Director will collaborate with other departments on offering New Student Programming opportunities following Orientation. This includes specific attention to special needs of first-year students coming to college following their experiences of the COVID pandemic. Attention to sophomore students who were remote during their first year will be necessary, as well as general support for the sophomore class in response to their limited experience on campus as a first year student. Finally, this position will assist with the daily operations of the Office for Campus Life and assists OCL colleagues as an administrative presence at various major campus events. The Assistant Director will serve on the Student Affairs administrator on-call system and represents the Office for Campus Life on various University committees as needed. This position requires the ability to maintain a flexible schedule. Some nights and weekend responsibilities will be required.
Knowledge and experience as typically acquired by:
Bachelor's degree required and at least 2 years of full-time work experience in orientation, new student programming, campus life or student activities.
Master's degree in Higher Education.
Experience in undergraduate orientation/new student planning and implementation.
Planning campus events and advising and supervising students; excellent interpersonal, organizational and customer service skills; understanding of and commitment to issues of cultural diversity and college student development; demonstrated leadership, advisory, organization, and management skills.
Special Work Schedule Requirements: Some after-hours evening and weekend required depending on student events schedule.
