The Career Exploration & Development team lives the University Mission and purpose of “transforming lives and fostering transformation” through high impact engagement initiatives that connect students and employers. The Career Advisor will join a dynamic team seeking to engage and advise students as they explore and discover their passions, purpose, and career opportunities. The Advisor is responsible for working with all students in supporting their professional growth. Knowledge of career and student development theories and assessment best practices are essential for this role. As a member of the advising staff, this professional reports to the Director regarding departmental operations and goals and may work according to the direction of other teammates associated with recruitment and career preparation.
Requirements include a bachelor’s degree; a master’s degree in higher education, college student personnel or related discipline is preferred. A minimum of one year of relevant experience working directly with college students; this could include a graduate school experience within a career center or may include a professional recruiting role.
Required proficiencies include: utilizing career center management software (preferably Handshake) to manage advising notes/transactions, events, job/internship/shadowing postings and mentoring initiatives; Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and other virtual conferencing models, Microsoft Office suite (especially Excel) and other software platforms; familiarity with college/university records management systems; demonstrates professionalism; ability to practice as a professional advisor in a college setting; proven ability to partner as an excellent teammate with a sound work ethic and dedication to both career development and the liberal arts in a college setting; strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability adapt are a must. Excellent communication skills and a valid driver’s license are required.
Advise students of all class levels and academic disciplines through a career coaching and developmental approach; incorporate career development theory and goal-setting into practice.
Maintain an adaptive advising model that emphasizes the value of connecting career exploration (internships; employer visits, mentoring; etc.) with engagement and retention efforts at Gannon.
Contribute to advising support and services for alumni – particularly alumni exploring new fields.
Prepare students for virtual and in-person interviews and events; provide students with performance and developmental feedback after interviews and related experiences.
Maintain and manage student and employer data and outcomes reporting associated with departmental efforts; work with Director to facilitate departmental assessment practices.
Perform other duties as assigned within the scope, responsibility and requirements of the position.
