Georgetown's Counseling and Psychiatric Service (CAPS)serves as the university's primary mental health service for our students. Our central mission is to collaborate directly with students in overcoming difficulties that may interfere with their well-being and the accomplishment of their educational, personal, and career goals.
The Director of the Counseling and Psychiatric Service (CAPS) center has responsibilities that include supervision and development of staff (psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and administrative staff), fiscal and administrative management, provision of direct clinical services to students (individual and group), development of outreach and educational programs, crisis intervention, consultation and liaison work with university constituents including deans, student affairs professionals, and hospital/psychiatric staff, and overall leadership of the center.
Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Student Health, directly supervising counseling center staff, and serving as a part of the Student Affairs Directors' team, the CAPS Director has responsibilities that include but are not limited to:
Leadership & Supervision
Leads and oversees all activities of the Counseling and Psychological Service (CAPS), including clinical, outreach, budgetary, and office functions.
Provides vision, leadership, and coordination of mental health services for a diverse multicultural campus.
Provides direct supervision for center staff, including assignment of reporting relationships and departmental structure.
Responsible for selection, evaluation, discipline, and change of status of mental health professional and support staff.
Develops and maintains personnel documentation, including position descriptions & performance reviews.
Provides administrative guidance and direction regarding clinical situations.
Develops plans for ongoing training of clinical staff.
Maintains departmental policies and procedures.
Communications & Collaborations
Responds to parent and student complaints and inquiries, including students wanting exceptions to the medical leave policy.
Responds to requests for students' charts.
Reviews or delegates review, and consults with Legal Counsel as necessary.
Responds to requests from student and outside media, in coordination with Public Affairs.
Coordinates CAPS role in the Engelhard curriculum infusion initiative.
Coordinates with key departments and programs across Student Affairs.
Maintains working relationship Counsel's Office and other key administrative areas.
Ensures effective coordination with external clinical service vendors - e.g., ProtoCall, Timely MD.
Oversees the relationship with the psychiatric unit at Georgetown Hospital
Reviews & approves affiliation agreements with the Department of Psychiatry at GU Medical Center
Direct Clinical Service
Conducts mental health/psychological evaluations and assessments.
Provides individual and group psychotherapy.
Provides crisis intervention services.
Conducts support groups as needed.
Shares intake and emergency responsibilities with other staff members.
Maintains effective case management to ensure that patient dispositions are successfully completed.
Documents and maintains timely and accurate client records.
Maintains current knowledge regarding professional practices, ethics, and laws.
Administration & Reporting
Performs GMS (Georgetown Management System) Cost Center Manager and HR (supervisor) approvals.
Oversees documentation of clinical services and collateral contacts for CAPS.
Provides final approval on departmental publications, brochures, and websites.
Attends Student Affairs Directors' meetings.
Attends the Threat Assessment Committee weekly meetings.
Attends the Case Management weekly meeting.
Prepares for and participates in Safety Net Training for faculty and staff.
Ph.D., M.D., or Psy.D. degree
Licensed to practice or eligibility for licensure in the District of Columbia
Extensive experience in a university counseling center, including 3 or more years of experience in management/supervisory roles
Familiarity with the clinical, legal and ethical aspects of treating college students
Awareness of student development and student health issues
