This position is designed to assist students to move more efficiently and effectively towards graduation and career goals. This individual will have the responsibility of providing advising support, outreach, recruiting and referral, assisting with divisional communication, and developing and participating in a variety of program, division and university events for the STEM division (includes majors in biology, chemistry, computer science, and mathematics; masters in environmental education; and supports pre-professional students interested in health careers). This individual will collaborate with Admissions, Pre-college Youth Programs and other campus constituents to participate in activities focused on recruitment, advising, and retention, including, but not limited to, New Student Orientation, Week of Welcome, Raider Registration, Preview Days, and campus visits. This individual will play a key role in academic advising and career planning and will assist students to develop an effective educational plan, to explore careers and to implement career planning. The successful candidate will be responsible for monitoring and tracking students' expected academic degree progress and providing intrusive advising to students in their division who have been identified as needing advising, support, and/or academic coaching. The successful candidate will consult and collaborate with various campus offices and services as needed for students at academic risk. Additionally, this position monitors and tracks expected academic progress of students in the Division at all levels of their education.
Minimum Classification Qualifications:
Two years' experience in advising or related field
Experience with student information systems and degree audit systems
Demonstrated knowledge of and experience providing excellent customer service
Degree in a STEM related field or experience advising or working with students pursuing a STEM related career.
Experience with student career counseling
Demonstrated competence in student data tracking and analysis

Academic Advising and Student Persistence:
Holds standard office hours for drop-in and by-appointment student advising; provides increased hours during peak registration periods; organizes group advising sessions (in consultation with Director and Program Chairs).
Utilizes tools such as Navigate, DegreeWorks and Banner Student Information System (SIS) to assist with advising and registration.
Reviews relevant student information such as academic history and demographic data to help identify and conduct outreach to students at risk of falling behind on their path to a degree.
Facilitates student registration; works with students and others to identify and remove barriers to persistence and completion.
Coordinates retention and persistence functions including design and implementation of surveys and collecting data to analyze and support retention and support activities and to monitor student academic success.
Connects students with resources, individuals and tools that can help them stay on track for academic success. This includes maintaining up-to-date requirements, practices and websites to assist students and faculty advisors.
Keeps accurate student records and monitors academic progress towards degree completion.
Explains degree (major, minor, certificates) structure, progress towards degrees, and develops a plan and timeline for completing degree requirements.
Assesses and interprets individual student needs; identifies students at academic risk, and makes appropriate referrals to internal and external resources.
Works closely with SSC's, faculty, division director, and other key campus offices such as Admissions and Raider Student Services to help manage processes related to recruiting, registration and retention, including working closely with division director to monitor enrollments.
Disseminates rules, regulations, and information pertaining to topics such as registration policies, tuition and refund policies, and admission policies to students.
Reviews transfer credits for incoming STEM students and when students apply for major status.
Establishes and develops effective relationships with students and faculty advisors; acts as a conduit for information between division director, faculty, and students.
Identifies and reaches out to students who are within 45 credits of graduation and refers them to appropriate resources to help them graduate.
Develops curriculum and teaches/co-teaches workshops/courses related to student persistence.
Engages in ongoing training and development pertaining to university-specific curricular requirements, academic policies, administrative procedures, and associated systems.
Serves on division and university committees and other groups/entities related to advising, retention, and overall student support.,
Provides advising and maintains up-to-date information to pre-professional students who are pursuing health careers, including those planning on transfering to bachelors programs in nursing, and students majoring in STEM and non-STEM majors.
Plans, implements, and collaborates with Division programs and the Office of Career Connections on events to connect students with career resources, and assists students with preparation of professional career profiles.
Assists students with understanding, pursuing, and selecting internship opportunities.
Collaborates with Office of Career Connections to develop and teach workshops/courses related to career preparation.,
Oversees administration of math placement program. Coordinates with test provider and online proctor provider. Advises division director and math chair regarding math placement processes and policies.
Trains and supports division faculty in advising and advising systems.
Works with other administrative offices on campus to ensure open and effective communication between academic programs, initial enrollment processes, and advising.
Provides instruction in the use of online resources for academic and career information.
Coordinates with SOU Foundation and Alumni Relations as needed.
Attends division and program meetings as needed and performs other duties as assigned by Division Director.,
Recruitment and Event Development/Participation:
Collaborates with the Office of Admissions to coordinate recruiting events for prospective students.
Participates in events including Preview Day programs, Raider Registration, campus visits, and other recruitment opportunities, as well as coordinating division faculty participating in these events.
Collaborates with Pre-College Youth Programs to facilitate and develop Advanced Southern Credit relationships including support, planning, and assessment processes as needed.
Plans and participates in Division events such as student gatherings and lectures and other events as needed.,
Assists in management and execution of student communication material (e.g., web sites, social media, email, etc.).
Writes and edits content for a variety of online and print materials.
Assists in management of social media sites.
Facilitates divisional exit interviews and collects information on graduate employment.
Special Instructions to Applicants:
Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
Must be able to work additional hours and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background check.
